Can't install Sierra High on MacBook Pro 2012 SSD - tried several SSDs

I've just upgraded my Macbook Pro 2012 Hard Drive to SSD drive and can't install the macOS. I format the drive with disk utility and it all goes fine. Go to install and installs it but towards the end of the installation comes up with a message that there were errors and try reinstalling once more.

I've tried severl different SSD's manufacturers and same thing. I'm running the install from USB current version of macOS Sierra High. I have done 100's of ssd upgrades but this is the 1st one with this issue.

When I try to format the ssd again I get errors. This once comes up often on several ssd's:

  • Mounting disk
  • Could not mount disk0s2 after erase
  • File system formatter failed.
  • operation failed.

Has anyone run into this problem?

Usually this is the hard drive/IR cable issue.

I just upgraded to the Samsung 500GB SSD on my Macbook Pro 13 mid-2012 (non retina).

ABSOLUTELY replace the SATA cable.

For me, if I had followed this advise from the get-go, it would have saved me 4 days of running around and late night sessions, as well as several chat sessions with the Apple “Genuises”. Interestingly, none of them ever raised the cable as a potential issue.

I didn’t replace the cable because when I opened up the laptop, the cable looked fine. It was working without any issue with the original HDD. In fact, I had swapped the HDD back in several times and it still worked without any problem, so I never suspected the SATA cable. I did all the safe starts, internet recovery, USB boot disks… everything. I should have just ordered the SATA cable from the start.

It wasn’t until I bought a SATA/USB cable to run the SSD as an external drive, and it working beautifully did I start to wonder about the cable. I finally ordered one and voila, everything worked like it should.

I would also recommend ordering one with the bracket because I had a bit of tough time getting the IR sensor cable back into the original bracket.
