I tried to remove the sim card with an earring (I know, stupid idea!), it had worked in the past but this time, I must have jammed something or screwed it up. Now, my phone still works most of the time, but it will frequently say no sim card installed and then no service. I have to reboot it for it to function, but then obviously my apps don't work.
Any advice?

Try firstly to clean the sim, check it for damage, if it is damaged then request a replacement- should be free.
check sim tray for damage/buckling which may be stopping sim making contact.
Use any guide which is linked on the right under the iPhone picture to remove the front display and expose the motherboard. Take a good look inside the sim slot at the gold prongs- make sure they're all angled up and none have been flattened/broken. Lift any flattened prongs very gently with a flathead screwdriver. Any missing prongs mean a soldering job... You can buy replacement sim slots on eBay, but you'll. Need to be very good at desoldering and soldering or have good contacts.
Instead of restoring your phone...... Just turn airplane mode on and then off again- it's in settings!
