also got a hot hot hot hot machine

Hi,

My computer has been very hot (for my standards) for some months, and I worry that it might be bad for the CPU. I read the other post 'Hot, hot, hot, hot' and downloaded CoolBook, SmcFanControl and Fan Control (I am aware that the last two are redundant). I've cranked up the fan rpm with Fan Control and the temperature has definitely dropped (to about 48ºC with the fans at about 4200rpm), although I am not running any CPU-intensive programs like Illustrator at the moment, so . However, I want to know how to diagnose the underlying problem. Apparently it is not a problem with the fans, since they can be forced to higher rpms. Can it be the heat sink or thermal sensors? Is there a way to find out without opening up the machine and replacing them?

If it were mine, I'd do major surgery and clean it down to the heat sinks. The heat sink vents are probably clogged. I'd also replace the thermal paste and blow out the fans. This guide will get you down to the heat sinks and vents. MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo Model A1150 Logic Board Replacement

so should i use a dust blower for that or should i get some brushes as well? from a lot of the photos it looks like one doesn't have to worry too much about static discharge to the same extent as e.g. replacing a hard disk or installing a new memory card. is this accurate?

Of course you should be concerned about ESD. Ground yourself out every time you sit down. Just reach over and touch the center screw of a grounded electrical outlet. I use a very soft sable artists brush.
