Is there a teardown for an Asus ux501v?

In particular I want to make sure my screen cable is correctly connected (as the screen is flickering) however I can't find a teardown for this laptop.

Hi @becbennett ,

Have you tried connecting an external monitor to verify that the problem is somewhere in the laptop's video cable / LCD screen area and not in the motherboard for example?

Here is a video that shows how to open the laptop. (it is in Russian but the video is self explanatory).

Unfortunately it doesn't show the video flex cable connection on the motherboard or show how to remove the display so that the cable connection on the screen can be accessed. (your problem may be at either end or in the LCD screen itself).

If you do decide to open the laptop (it's not still covered by the manufacturer's warranty is it?), after you have removed the back cover, be sure to disconnect the battery from the motherboard before you proceed any further. There is still power on the motherboard even if the laptop is off and you don't want to cause more problems if you accidentally slip whilst using tools etc. Be sure to reconnect it before you close up.

Basic rule when repairing electronics, power (or battery) off first, on last.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Yeah I've connected it to another screen, plus the flicker can get worse or go away completely depending on the position of the screen and how you're holding it, so I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue.

No it's not under warranty any more.

I've already got the laptop open, and am now a bit stumped as to what to do next. Like disconnecting the battery, I'd love a teardown on that too just so I'm not "guessing" that this is the right cable to disconnect.

Further to that though, I'm worried I literally have to take the entire thing apart just to get the hinge off to see if there's damage to the cable, or if it's just loose (I'm thinking it's just loose, as the screen flicker is intermittent and sometimes won't happen for days at a time, and then all of a sudden it will happen often enough that the computer is unusable).

Ughh, it's one of those things where I need my laptop every day for my business and taking it to someone else to get fixed may take weeks, so I was hoping it would be straight forward enough, but unfortunately it's not looking like it.

Hi @becbennett ,

At 3:03+ minutes into the video, the battery connection to the motherboard is pointed out.

Try gently tapping the cover behind the screen and see if you can make the flickering start. (The video cable connector on most laptops is usually along the bottom 1/4 somewhere near the middle or up one side (or the other) but it is never in the middle or along the top of the screen)

Also try it around the hinge area (left and right - not sure which side the flex cable goes through to the lid)

If you can't make it happen in either of these places then the chances are that it is on the motherboard end.

At least if it is you don't have to worry about removing the lid and hinges etc.
