Display won't turn on after battery replacement

Hi y'all!

Last night I replaced the battery of my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro 15". After the new battery was in and the casing was screwed back I turned the MacBook on. Everything worked fine (few!).

Just like the repair manual said, I didn't plug the charger in and let the battery drain while I used it. At the end of the night, when the battery was empty and the computer turned off, I plugged the charger in and went to bed. (the charging light was orange)

This morning the charging light was green, so I turned my MacBook on again. I heard the fans whooshing, but the display stayed completely black (not even the bleedthrough of the backlight). I tried this a few times and every time it started up I heard the fans whooshing without anything happening to the display. I opened the laptop up again, and removed the battery cable from the motherboard for ~10 seconds before plugging it in again. This didn't help either.

I thought it might be a misplaced cable, but I didn't saw anything out of the ordinary. This is my first 'real' repair (except a few iPhone screen replacements), so I have no idea what the problem could be. Does anyone of you know what the problem could be? I made some close-up shots of the motherboard, which you can find here:

Thank you!

While not the best image (IMG_0128.JPG) it's the only one that shows the display connector. It appears the connector is not fully seated. Take a closer image of the display cable connection. I would first disconnect the battery before resetting so you don't blow the fuse.

Update (01/14/2018)

Lets try doing an SMC reset, follow this Apple T/N How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac as well as a NVRAM (PRAM) reset following this Apple T/N How to reset NVRAM on your Mac

Thank you for the quick reply!

I am not at home at the moment, so I have no way of checking it right now, but I'll check your hypothesis out as soon as I get home! :)

Hi @danj ,

I looked at the connector yesterday, it seemed like it might have been wrongly connected indeed.

After I disconnected and connected the adapter it it still didn't work. So I opened the MacBook again to reconnect again. After this time the display did go on (and stayed on after I connected it to the adapter).

Sometime later that day my MacBook was off again and when I tried to start it up the display wouldn't go on. This happened a few times since.

I think I have found a pattern.

- When the MacBook is connected to the power source, the display won't go on, at all.

- When the MacBook was recently cut off the power (10-20 minutes), the display will go on, but will turn off (permanently) sometime during the booting process. (after I filled in my password. (I do have FireVault on))

- When the MacBook is disconnected from the power source it will go on without any problems. And after it has booted up you can connect it to the power without any problems.

- If the computer has been idle for too long, while connected to the power source, the display will go off again, and the only way to get in on, is by unplugging the computer from the power source, turning it off, waiting for 10-20 minutes and rebooting it.

This is all very weird to me, as far as I know, there is no direct relation between the display and the power source, is there? If you have any ideas what might cause this problem, I would love to hear it! :)

Kind regards,

Ruben

Hi Ruben!

I have the same issue after doing a battery replacement on my Macbook Retina 2012. Did you find a solution?

Nice regards,

Armin

How about expanding your issue so we can spin this out as its own question as I'm sure Ruben has moved on as this question is over two years old.

Yes, I will do that soon. I am trying out a few things first to eventually fix the problem.
