My iMac display is black and Is Apples diagnostic suite free

Is Apples diagnostic suite free for iMac 2008 that’s out of warranty?

I mean at the Apple store.

Update (01/09/2018)

@danj @captainsnowball Here is a video of it:

So when I turn it on it has all but one LED lit that’s the 4th led for display. After a couple seconds it automatically restarts cause the display isn’t responding. Then it just stays like that until I turn it off.

P.S at first uploading this video it took about 10 minutes. Then it says video limit of 30sec. Then I had to edit my video and upload it again!

Sadly, I think you also have a bad PCH chip. Time for a new logic board.

@danj is I just best to buy a new Mac since this one is old?

da

It would suit you better! I would look for a used 2011 or newer.

da

@danj Yep I’ve really wanted a new MacBook Pro for a while. I have a 27” 2010 iMac but I’m tiered of desktop computers. So I’d like to buy a new MacBook Pro 15” that’s maxed out.

@captainsnowball is this what you wanted?

The title of your question undermines what you really want and that is to know what's wrong, then how to fix it.

First, when it is booted up can you discern the desktop, (use a flashlight held at an angle to the screen). If it is there, replace the inverter. Here's how:

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Inverter Replacement

UPDATE

If you can't discern the desktop, hook it up to an external monitor. If that fails it narrows it down to the GPU.

Ok. I going to put my hard drive back in. And boot it. The title says that cause at the time I was only asking that question and then I was asked what my problem was.

da

thanks @mayer! I know your good at this stuff.

da

Well I can’t see anything on display when I do that. I’m using the hard drive on an external dock and the activity led on the dock doesn’t blink one bit. So it’s not booting.

da

Also can I check the inverter with a multimeter?

Your original grey disks has the diagnostics on it. Here's a bit more: OS X El Capitan: Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test

Apple no longer supports this system. Apple does not offer software at the stores any more (all application software is available online within the Apps Store).

Diagnostics is something the Geniuses do offer but only with supported systems.

Basically, you need to find the grey disks that came with your system. You might find them for sale online (used).

Why are you so focused on the diagnostics? I bet you if you give us your symptoms we can help you.

Well my iMacs displays backlight is not turning on so I can’t boot up at all. Also the usbs are not powering so the keyboard doesn’t work. I currently have the hard drive out and plugged into my other iMac so I can boot up and do a backup. The 4th status led is not lit so the display isn’t responding. I’m thinking that the display isn’t getting any power. So I want to find out what’s wrong with it so I can fix it. I know Apple won’t be able to repair this if they need parts cause it’s an obsolete product.

No life at all?

da

Well you're right Apple won't help you. They won't even look at it. But an independent repair person would at least look at it.

Can you tell me if you get a startup bong? Do you see any flicker on the screen (black may change to a lighter shade)

Can you tell us a bit more on what happened. Was the system zapped by a lighting strike or power surge? The more details on what happened the better!
