How to I get data off of this damaged iPod.

I have 2 damaged ipods that a customer has requested for me to retrieve her songs. I have tried many options and I cannot get this data off.

I have tried transplanting the hard drive into a working ipod classic. I have tried putting the drives into an enclosure. I have tried reading the drives on windows, mac, and linux. Either the drives show up as not initialized or it asks to be restored in itunes. The closest I have gotten to get data off of one is on a windows pc it showed up as a storage device but when I tried to drag files off of the ipod it crashed and rebooted. I have tried a few data recovery programs and either the programs didnt work or it crashed . Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Here are images of the hard drives i am trying to recover data from

The enclosure is a 1.8-inch ZIF/CE(IDE 40pin) Hard Drive Enclosure Case With USB2.0 Cables from amazon

@j0vian what are the HDD make and model? Do you know what computer (Mac, Windows etc.) was used to copy the files to etc.? What enclosure do you use? These will not work by transplanting into another iPod. The moment you do that, it wants to restore the drives.

I'm having the same problem too-moved the drive into an enclosure but I cannot see anything on the drive?

@oldturkey03

The 120 gb drive is a Toshiba model mk123gal

The 80 gb drive is a Samsung model HS081HA

I believe a windows computer was used to put the data on the ipods

Presumably the hard drives are fairly old and could be suffering from bad sectors, causing them to often show up as unitialised. There's a chance that Spirite from grc.com could recover them. But even so, I'm not sure what sort of filing system they'll have on them and whether it'll be readable by Windows, Linux or Mac. Perhaps you could image them to an SSD and refit the SSD into the iPod?

Spinrite costs $89 and has no trial to verify it works.

Indeed, it's not cheap, but it comes with a money-back offer if it doesn't deliver the goods. But if you're doing a lot of fixing you may well find it a good investment.

Can you put the drive back in the ipod and get it into disc mode? If so, I had good luck with Winamp and it's ipod plug-in for retrieving the tracks.

If not, I was able to mine into disc mode by first going into diagnostic mode, go through all the diagnostics, then was able to get into disc mode and Winamp.

Then I did a format in Windows. Now was able to do a restore in iTunes.

May not solve your issue, but it's worth a try and free.

Thanks, unfortunately the charging port has damaged pins. It will charge but will not connect to the computer.

How do I replace the charging port on a ipod classic?
