PS4 randomly loses Wifi connection and disconnects controller

Hi, as the title says:

PS4 randomly loses Wifi connection and disconnects controller and no way to reconnect them again or having my PS4 controller to detect the console again, UNLESS I do a HARD RESET to the console (keeping the power button touched with finger for several seconds - doing a turn off / turn on cycle manually)

Same I read here in this thread, but no solution found.

https://community.playstation.com/conten...

Some others suggest it is related to the antenna. But my console has never fallen, and if it was the antenna, I guess turn it off several wireless devices around, and approaching the Wireless controller to the console should allow the controller to detect the console. But it does not.

Other suggest it was a bad Firmware installed (bugs on it). I can't reverse the last update of the console. I don't even know if that is possible.

I'm having this annoyance constantly in the middle of an online game, and I need to restart the PS4 mannually every time in order to have WIFI and BT wireless connections restored. THERE IS NO WAY to connect them again, until I do this HARD RESET to the PS4 console.

When turned on, then everything connects again (wireless controller and WIFI). Then again, at a random time, disconnects from WIFI and Wireless controller (in the middle of a game, or movie, etc.). It just keeps doing it.

By the way, I have another spare controller. Same thing. Fully charged both of them. Same results.

Any other suggestion will be very appreciated.

Having same issue. Following. Hope we can find a solution, this is very irritating.

da

I have the same issue. I'm ready to smash my PS4 and use the Xbox 1 I have instead. When I called Sony about it they said I had to send my PS4 to them for $100, and the problem "might" be something they could fix. I could just go buy another PS4 for about $200 and actually have it work. I would really like to get this resolved. Ive only had my PS4 for about 2 years. It sholdn't be having this kind of problem.

da

Hello. I'm on this forum because mine and my brothers PS4's have this issue. We tried to play Overwatch last night and this afternoon but the remote keeps shutting off and we have to manually shut them down. We have 4 remotes and all have the same issue. It happened about 10 times before we decided to give it a break. This has been going on for at least 6 months. It started off every once in a while but now it's at least several times a day. I really don't want to buy a new PS4 but I might have to. I really hope someone finds a solution for this. Thanks in advance.

da

Same problem, but if I wait a minute I can get the controller to reconnect for a bit. Gonna try and go hard line I always think that's best anyway. To the user who was going to go to Xbox--don't do it bro, don't let the bastards win!

da

Same here

As soon as I turn it on I have to keep the remote busy a bit, if I don’t at least scroll through the menu then the remote disconnects and won’t reconnect without a hard reset.

WiFi disconnects and connection tests take forever or don’t even go trough sometimes.

Well, just to confirm my personal workaround to solve this issue, and to help others in same situation. Thanks again Scott for the suggestions in your answer. I also contacted Sony chat support, and since it couldn't be fixed by troubleshooting software and since my console is 2 years old (out of warranty) sending it to Sony for repair will cost a fee of $99 plus taxes (shipping not included both ways), I ended up tried one more simple thing in order to save some bucks.

To summarize:

  • I did a fresh cleaned installation, deleting the firmware and downloading it again from SONY website, running the PS4 console in safe mode to perform this tasks, and of course, backing up all my info before. Results: Same issue.
  • I blew compressed air with the open console, in case some dust is causing static. Result: Same issue.
  • I moved my Ps4 to another room, to try to avoid interference, and again, fully charged both of my controllers. Result: Same issue, and neither of the controllers re-connect.

So the remaining thing was sending it back to Sony or simply buying a new console since looks it is hardware related (wireless module). I saw some videos in youtube explaining how to dump the firmware in the chip to fix corrupted firmware in the wireless program, but requires hardware tools, and electronic soldering. Again, not my field.

Solution (for my case).

Running a ETHERNET cable from the console directly to the router, and NO USING WIFI EVER in the PS4. I run my tests and VOILA. IT never disconnects my controllers, and the internet connection/ PSnetwork stays UP!

Looks like something is wrong with the WIFI module, or its firmware on it, which makes the entire Connectivity for the console to freeze (including bluetooth and USB connectors. No controllers detected when this happens, no BT, no wifi, UNTIL I manually restart the console via front button)

As long as I keep using this console with ETHERNET CABLE for the network connectivity, EVERYTHING RUNS PERFECT and SMOOTH. Better yet, I get BETTER speed ( since this PS4 model uses just WIFI 2.4 GhZ, and using a direct ethernet cable is better ).

Bottom line: I saved some bucks by keeping my console with this connection scenario, using ethernet cable directly to the router, I got better internet speed, and my online games keep running !. My controllers stays connected to the console for hours, even when REST MODE, I can wake up the console with no issues in connectivity / BT at all.

So, I'm just posting this self answer to be documented in this site, in order to suggest a simple idea for others in similar situation and with consoles out of warranty. Simple as just using the included ethernet port in the console worked for me.

YMMV.

My 2 cents.

Did you only connect your cable to the console, without doing anything else? For me it worked for a while, but then i shut it down, and when i press the ps button to start, the controller lights up but then before starting up it turns off. Then when it says press ps button to connect, i got the same issue, white flashing light...

Got any suggestions for what to do? :)

da

Weird and $@$*!& because my PS4 pro has always been wires to my router. It is one I purchased as well. Pretty decent speeds. I run test daily, usually. Anyway, I have had this thing since RDR2 came out and this has only happened twice. I'm now worried this is going to become a reg thing lol. Even if I am in warranty I really do not want to send my machine through the %#*@ mail, there & back ! Ummm NO ?! It will probably come back worse. I am going to restart my modem as I have not in awhile and cross my fingers. This is really annoying though. I thought I disliked the button sync up on Xbox buuut it might be better for situations like this lol or not ..they both suck haha... Hope an update or something will fox issue.

da

I had to plug mine into the Ethernet. Hardwired like that, it worked great . Then I unplugged it and moved it back to the room it was in, and it works great. Been a couple weeks and still no issues. Not sure why that worked, because it didn’t need a software update. Hopefully this will work for you.

da

You saved my PS4. Have a great day and a great life. You deserve it

da

I have had my ps4 for 9 months now and for the last 5 I have had this problem. I just moved houses and got new internet and it’s still happening.

so all of those suggestions are pretty much the accumulation of the diagnostics.

before going forward, connection issues can be caused by distance and obstruction. make sure any paired devices are not blocked by things such as doors/walls of an entertainment unit, walls, or couches, or even the human body.

1) i always start with a factory reset, and firmware restore. download the PS4UPDAT file from the Playstation website, and reinstall it onto the device by following the steps supplied by sony's support page. The reason i start with this, is because it is the least invasive of the repairs, and fixes a various number of issues that are caused by data corruption.

2) Next, i would look at a cleanout. Dirt and dust are conductive, and can cause board shorts. this can cause issues with processing the components like antennas.

3) replacing internal components. the Pickups for Bluetooth and Wifi are wired through the device, and mounted into the front of the housing. they can pinch from just moving the device. they can also build up static electricity from dirt and dust in your device, which could essentially damage them if the discharge is powerful enough.

4) Logic Control for the Wireless device: The wireless card is soldered into the motherboard, and replacing this requires a skillset in Surface mount Soldering. this could be failing, which can result in faulty connection.

5) Integrated motherboard failure: The problems could persist into the circuits in the board. this would require a board replacement, and that becomes more expensive than replacing the device itself, as the board is also paired to the Disc drive, which would also need to be transferred.

Excellent reply. Thanks. I will try to do one by one the options suggested, and I will come back with an update soon. Hope this solve this annoying issue since I am getting frustrated in the middle of online battles/games. Otherwise, as you pointed out in option 5, it will be better a new console.

da

glad to have been of assistance. BE ADVISED, you will lose all your data on step1

da

you would be able to re download it right after you do the first step

da

I turned off my playstation Unplug the power cord for a little bit Made sure the cord and controller were plugged in then plugged it back in held the power button until a screen came up go all the way down and select rebuild Database and it worked for me Wi-Fi and my controller

If you have your 'connect to internet' box checked on your PS4 system settings, and you lose Wi-Fi, the Bluetooth controllers will lose sync, at what seems to be a random time, afterwards.

I unfortunately have no internet service provider where I live but I am able to use hotspot via my phone. If my phone dies while I am using hotspot for my PS4, I will lose my Wi-Fi connection, and shortly later my controllers will unsync. I have to perform a hard reset to get my controllers working again. This problem only occurs when I have the 'connect to internet' option activated but no wifi access.

So put simply, if you have the 'connect to internet' option checked, make sure you have sufficient internet or it will annoy you greatly. I wouldn't spend money on a new controller or try to fix my antenna just yet. . . Pretty sure it's some sort of interference issue between Bluetooth and the PS4 attempting to connect to Wi-Fi.

Hope that helps...

If you have original PS4 then it only connect to the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band on your router. If you receive an error on your PS4 that the signal is too weak then just reset or reboot your router.I know this sound weird but trust me it helps maximum of times otherwise turn off other devices on the network. If your PS4 is far from the router then try to move your system as closer to the router as you can.

Some time it might be an issue with DNS server setting. Find the setting button on your PS4 menu.In that search for network and in that select set yp internet connection. After that select custom from there. Select the WiFi network from your router.

Once you connected to the network select do not specify option. Select the DNS setting on manual. Setup primary DNS on 8.8.8.8 and secondary DNS on 8.8.4.4

If you are not getting all these steps then use Ethernet cable to connect your PS4 and Router. problem solved.

This issue doesn't have anything to do with the Wi-Fi connection it's self, and the original PS4 doesn't support 5GHz. It is either firmware, or crosstalk from the Wi-Fi antenna and Bluetooth antenna being the same frequency. I believe it to be a hardware failure as they both shut off at the same time, but the only thing that fixes the issue for anybody on this thread is using only Wi-Fi or only Bluetooth, but not both.

The controller disconnecting really confuses me however the PlayStation disconnecting from the Wi-Fi is normal. The way to fix it is by changing the Wi-Fi channel, I changed it by going to 192.168.1.1 and changing the channel but it depends on your Wi-Fi provider

Take it back if you can. It happened to me once a few years after getting it. Then it didn't happen again for a few years. The last few months it's been doing it quite often. A few days ago it happened 2 times in one day.

It seems its too rare of an issue because I can't seem to find many of these posts and nothing at all from Sony.

After having this issue only recently, and reading through these posts, the issue with controllers disconnecting when the system is using wifi, is directly related to the system using the same antenna. If you turn off wifi on the PS4 or connect it using an Ethernet cable, the problem goes away immediately. This has to either be a firmware issue or a problem on the board, as replacing the antenna did not change anything. Normally my system only runs with a wired connection, but I recently moved temporarily and my normal network connections will not be setup until my new house is built. I broke a controller in the process of trying to fix this. It was old, and I felt better for a few minutes, but Sony screwed up an update back in 2017 that still persists today, and seems to be a problem even with the new systems.

New antenna won't help, I have the exact same problem and tried the antenna change and all I get is better signal to wifi. The network bt card still stops responding every so often.

Only thing I can help you with instead of hard resetting everytime hold down the power key till it beeps twice and the ps4 will go into shut down. It's still annoying but it's better than a hard reset.

I have never dropped my ps4 either I think it's just old wear and tear, corrupted firmware or incompatable router. Now that I think about it I just swapped my old wifi 5 to wifi 6 i think I might need to separate the 2 4 and 5 ghz bands. I'll test and make another comment to this old page

*edit

Ok so I think I fixed via safe mode (ps4=off hold down power till it beeps twice and let go) now go to upgrade system and now choose which is convenient for you (I chose internet) let it do its thing and done it should have fixed the problem for a good 5 hours and counting now, no drop wifi notifications anymore

Edit**

Ok so u was just doing some further test and went to network settings and switch from my guest wifi said back to my original said and guess what happen when I went to test it internet connection failed and controller no responsive. Previously I turned on the guest account so I can separate the 2 4 and 5ghz bands to see if it help things for some reason it still froze anyways I decided to go to safe mode and load the newest firmware after all that it stayed on till now 6 hours later...until I switch back to my original al wifi. So next I'm going to restart change my wifi back to guest 2.4 restart and I'll let it run for awhile again to see if that fixed things...wish me luck .

***edit

Well it's been a day no more blutooth and wifi dropping so what I did was activated the 2.4ghz guest account on my router and connected my ps4 it. Did a full power down and when I restarted it no more wifi...well it did once but instead of just a pop up the game also waited for reconnection after a few seconds. Other than thar no more errors hope this helped everyone

the problem is that your ps4 will have trouble connecting to bluetooth therefore it doesn't read some of your inputs and it will lose connection and turn off your controller, also poor wifi connections can cause bad controller connection aswell

Merged dual-band network that runs on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz on the same SSID seem to create an issue when there's a brief interference in your network signal triggering disconnect. Going into your router settings and giving them unique names seems to remedy this problem. (Don't recommend Xfinity routers) can also run the hardwired connection.

(Your PS4 is probably dirty too 😂)

No, I had tried that solution already and it did nothing. I eventually gave up until the next system update, after doing that it's been fine with no other changes to anything.

My issue now though, is that I have coil whine from the PSU so...Sony must be trying to get me to upgrade is my thought....internals are super clean btw.

da

Strange, Are you sure its not the PSU on the way out creating voltage issues? My console still suffers from this problem unless its plug directly into the internet. However If i do a firmware reset on my router it will work until it re-updates.

I had this problem with my older PS4 I even bought a new controller. I have recently bought a PS4 pro and the same happens with this unit with the included controller and the older controllers. I think that there must be an issue with WiFi interference. I live in a condo with multiple WiFi signals and it would be nice if Sony could add an option to change WiFi channels on the controller. I will have to try the hard wire Ethernet cable and see if that changes anything for me.

Some times it must be related with your Antena. So try On new Antena. On the other hand it is related to your firmware use. So check onit. Sometimes issuer arisen because of the last system updatem. keep try with both mention above.

I suggest opening the console and manually check the Bluetooth antenna and receiver if it is still good and if it is still connected to the motherboard. If it is not damaged, just clip it back in place on the motherboard and that will solve the problem. If it is damaged, buy a new receiver and put it on urself. It's pretty simple.

I’ve not been having this EXACT issue but similar. My controller with lag while playing games. I could be pushing the stick in one direction and the controls get “stuck” and my player will be moving in a completely different direction. This happens often and I’ve also had issues with the Bluetooth not staying connected with a PDP Cloud remote license for use with PS4. I’m really pulling my hair out over it. I did read where one person was having trouble after plugging in a USB hub, which is something I did a month or two ago. Not really sure when the issues started. I’ve repaired my wife’s laptop in the past so I think I could do any repairs that would necessitate such a thing. Anybody have any thoughts if this would be the same cause?

Reformatted the PlayStation completely, still had the same issue. For me this issue was the wifi connection! For some reason, whenever the wifi dropped out (mine was from a weak connection to my room) the controller would drop out too. I found the problem because I moved my PlayStation to the loungeroom near the modem, I have not had one issue with it since and it's been months. Used to drop out every 5-10 mins. Give that a go. Try a hard line and see if the problem goes away. It 100% was the issue for

Hello, I am having this same exact problem. I don’t know how to fix it besides doing a hard reset. I can say that after you hard reset your console and disconnect the ac cord from the PlayStation for a couple of minutes, then it should happen less often. This has never ever happened to me before and I have had my ps4 ever since it first came out. I’m thinking it has something to do with an update but I’m not really sure. I only say this because it’s happening to a lot of people from owning the ps4 when it originally came out, to having a new one they just bought not to long ago. Hopefully this gets fixed ASAP

Mine is first gen as well i have done l everything but a factory reset. But since I changed my wifi 6 configuration the problem hasn't re-occurred since. The reason for the disconnect is the ps4 wifi is incompatable with a router that likes to hop from one channel and/or frequency to another. So you have to separate the two bands into 2.4ghz a/b/g/n and 5ghz ax only kind of configuration. Oh and you get an slight increase in bandwith over 5ghz that way as well. For wifi 6 same thing but do not use wpa 3 since it activates a second 2.4 ghz signal that that also like to confuse the ps4 since I think the bt controller is connected on a high channel as well so it doesn't interfere with the

They are unfortunately, the antenna connect to 2 different bands at once....most devices with blutooth come in a dial wifi and bt module, and they usually have two antenna so they don't share. No idea why they would sodder the wireless module onto the board like that lazy work they should started with a ngff slot like they did in the ps4 slim and pro esp with Sony trying to get all their devices to remotely connect to each other. Or use a stronger antenna that's more than 5 db. Changing to a diff antenna will get you a signal boost although some what fineky I do have a strong wifi connection now going aprox 80 /30 mbps...down side is the ant will loosen if you move it abit. But this is a temp fix ppl that wifi chip is worn out so you'll disconnect from wifi if u run too hot, but it won't freeze up lik.e b4.

The only true fix is to replace the wifi chip there's a YouTube video that shows you how...Goodluck with that it's abit outs my league.

Hello, I had the same problem, controllers loosing connection from ps4 and reset on ps4 needed.

I know is a problem related with the wifi router, because with a Ethernet cable is not happening, and same issue with a brand new ps4.

Solution, laptop connected to wifi, and ps4 connected to Hotspot from laptop.

With that, no problems at all, I know is not the most comfortable one, but hopefully helps :)
