Rogue kernel_task only when iSight/Airport Cable plugged in

Hi, so yesterday I removed the LCD of my MacBook. After reassembly, the Fan is running at full speed and kernel_task is massively slowing down the machine. This may be due to my disassembly, it is also possible that it is caused by an Update (right now it's on 10.13.2).

Upon further investigation I noticed that when I unplug the iSight/Airport cable, it runs fine. I also tried plugging the Airport cable into my old 2008 MacBook, which works fine. The other way around works fine aswell (plugging the old MacBooks Airport Cable into the 2010 Macbook).

Additionally, I tried unplugging all devices from the Airport/iSight Cable (Airport, Camera, Bluetooth Board), and just plugging in the Cable without the devices yields the same result.

So in conclusion, it seems to be down to the cable, which however works fine on the old MacBook. It could also be down to a kext error, which to me doesn't explain why the issue persists when only the cable itself is plugged in.

If anyone has an Idea on this curious Issue, I would be thankful. The only solution right now seems to be pulling off the display glass of the old MacBook aswell and swapping the cables/airport cards/bluetooth board altogether, which I'd rather not do.

Thanks in advance

Soeren

Were you ever able to solve this? I'm having the same issue.

This happens if either the cable is slightly damaged (when removing the glass) or the camera PCB under the glass is damaged. Replace either the cable and/or the camera board and this will resolve the issue

I figured out what the issue was.

I never did anything with the cord before the problem started though. I believe I had a little water damage. I thought the logic board was screwed after it happened, but I replaced it and it still had the same problem (kernal_task taking up insane amounts of CPU). I randomly came across a thread where a guy had the issue, but not from water damage, from changing his display. He said unplugging the camera cord fixed it, and that worked for me as well. You think the only way to use my camera again is to change the cord? I tried cleaning the connector with alcohol, but that didn't work.

Hi Soerenfi ,

Firstly, was the battery disconnected when unplugging the iSight cable each time? Also, I would avoid putting the cable in an '08 machine, the iSight cable is not interchangeable with that range, even if it shows function, it's not really worth the risk as they are different cables. There is no compatibility stated officially. The '09 and '10 cables aren't even interchangeable with each other in any official capacity. I would try avoiding putting the 2008 cable into the 2010, I assume that's a Unibody Macbook, Late 2008?

I have personally seen the iSight cable prevent a machine from even powering on so they definitely can cause serious faults. One thing to note is these cables can cause very bad shorts which can kill the logic board entirely. There shouldn't be any thermal sensors associated with the iSight cable so if the fans are spinning up and it's lagging, it sounds more like the iSight socket on the logic board has taken damage.

The fact that the cable still causes the problem with nothing but the logic connected definitely adds to this being the cause. Personally I would try a replacement cable first as they're quite cheap and fitting a 2008 cable could make things worse.

If a replacement cable yields the same results, the socket has shorted and will either need replacing or a full logic replacement is in order which is expensive considering the age of the machine.
