i have an itouch3g that i cracked the screen on but it still worked,i bought a new screen and now it doesnt work after installing it,i have tried reconnecting/disconnecting the ribbon cable a few times as well as resetting via power and home button with no luck,any help/advice much appreciated

Hello,
Try to fit again your cracked digitizer. If it works, it means that the one you bought is not working (more common than you think especially if it was cheap)or was damaged during repair.
Otherwise, the motherboard is damaged and repair on your own will be much more complicated.
