Flashing folder with question mark for multiple drives

Hi all,

I have a MacBook Pro with a flashing question mark in the folder and does not continue to boot.

I replaced the hard drive and it worked for maybe 1-2 weeks before having the same problem and refusing to boot. I don't have backups of the drive and don't care for the data on it. Just want to get it working first.

I've tried PRAM and SMC reset to no avail. I tried apple diagnostic and that said either something wrong with the charger (highly doubt it as charger is an Apple unit), or drive failure (code VDH002). I tried verifying the disk in Disk Utility and it said to repair. I tried repairing it and it said "Error: Partition map repair failed while adjusting structures to fit current whole disk size."

**While typing that result, the Macintosh HD disappeared from the disk util sidebar. Not sure what it means but I thought I'd mention it.**

Please let me know what can be done. Appreciate the help! :)

Hi Dan, I changed back the computer because I am 100% sure of the model. The number is A1502 EMC 2835.

I thought it might be drive (SSD) failure so I replaced the part with this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0178T..., another SSD for the computer, not HDD.

In this model, the SSD attaches straight to the motherboard so there is not cable to replace.

christopherblack2012 - It sounds like you didn't reformat the drive fully and setup a GUID partition map.

Follow this guide from a working Mac: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive. Then use it to reformat the drive and install a fresh copy of OS onto your drive. As you have some important data on the drive you'll need to get another drive to setup as your boot drive. Then once you get it going use this adapter to salvage your data from the other drives: OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Enclosure for Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models)

It sounds like both drives just failed, and you could have bad luck. See if you can boot from an external drive, and try another SSD if you can.

When I try to boot off an external it either doesn't recognize it, or shows a white screen with a flashing prohibition/no sign. I'd like to not have to purchase another ssd as they aren't cheap, unless that becomes my only option. If it comes to that, how can I be sure the same thing won't happen again?

In that case, I'm not so sure. It sounds like it might be a logic board problem. What OS is on the external?

It was a linux os, and the macbook wouldnt recognize it at all. Then I put the Mavericks installer on it and it showed a white screen with a flashing prohibition sign.

Ah, that's your problem. This Mac won't run anything older than El Capitan because it's a 2015 model. Macs can't run any versions older than the ones they shipped with. As for linux, Macs can be picky with some flavors of linux. I think there is some special configurations you have to do sometimes.
