Why is my refrigerator/freezer not staying cold?

I have a 2000 Whirlpool ref/freezer side by side unit. I replaced the defrost control switch thinking that was the problem. The unit worked fine for a few days then it went out again. It stayed warm for a few days now it's working fine. Any ideas?

Lowell Crowder - When it was warm for a few days, did you hear it running? Did you hear any clicking noises coming from the rear of the unit? Clicking noise would be an overheating compressor. If nothing was running it could be the temperature control sticking , that's common on those units.

No I didn't hear a clicking sound. I've changed the defrost timer and the evaporator fan. Still not getting cold. The evaporator fan isn't coming on. I've noticed when I slam the door hard sometimes the fan will come on but it doesn't stay on for long. ??????

Lowell Crowder - Sounds like your door switch is bad, the contacts inside the switch are sticking and the refrigerator thinks the door is open. Normally, when the door opens the evaporator fan motor stops running until you close the door, the it runs again. Its thinking the door is open. That will definilty cause the problem your having. The switch is simple to test and replace. Unplug the refrigerator. Slide a putty knife or similar under the long side of the switch and push a tab in. At the same time pullin the switch out, towards you. You'll have to work both sides, each long side has a tab holding it in place. Once you have it out take a pic with phone of the wires so you'll know where each wire goes. The switch is a common part. I've even found them at auto part stores like ORileys and Pep Boys. Take the switch with you to besure its the correct size and terminals. Just attach the wires as in pic. and push the switch in place. Easy!

Be sure to have refrigerator unplugged! I hope this helps.

If you do think it's broke. Get stuff out of the freezer so that if it totally fails your loss will be minimized.

Pay attention to like you would a sick puppy. It's going to try to tell you whats wrong. Look for its symptoms. Feel it in different areas a few times a day. Listen to it.

Meanwhile here's some things to check out:

Cause 1

Condenser Coils are Dirty

The condenser coils are usually located under the refrigerator. They dissipate heat as refrigerant passes through them. If the condenser coils are dirty, they won’t dissipate the heat effectively. As debris builds up on the coils, the refrigerator becomes less efficient, causing the refrigerator to work harder to cool down. If the coils are significantly dirty, the refrigerator will not be able to maintain the proper temperature. Check the condenser coils to determine if they are dirty—if the condenser coils are dirty, clean them.

Cause 2

Condenser Fan Motor

The condenser fan motor draws air though the condenser coils and over the compressor. If the condenser fan motor is not working properly, the refrigerator won’t cool properly. To determine if the fan motor is defective, first check the fan blade for obstructions. Next, try turning the fan motor blade by hand. If the blade does not spin freely, replace the condenser fan motor. If no obstructions are present and the fan blade spins freely, use a multimeter to test the fan motor for continuity. If the condenser fan motor does not have continuity, replace it.

Cause 3

Evaporator Fan Motor

The evaporator fan motor draws air over the evaporator (cooling) coils and circulates it throughout the refrigerator and freezer compartments. Some refrigerators have more than one evaporator fan motor. On refrigerators with only one evaporator, the evaporator is located in the freezer compartment. If the evaporator fan is not working, it will not circulate the cold air to the refrigerator compartment. If this occurs, the freezer may still get cold, while the refrigerator will not get cold. To determine if the evaporator fan motor is defective, try turning the fan blade by hand. If the fan blade does not turn freely, replace the fan motor. Additionally, if the motor is unusually noisy, replace it. Finally, if the motor does not run at all, use a multimeter to test the motor windings for continuity. If the windings do not have continuity, replace the evaporator fan motor.

Logan - I was thinking that too, but a bad compressor usually wont be intermittent.
