30 inch display has thick line in centre

My 30 inch cinema display has a 3 mm thick black vertical line exactly in the centre.

It started as a thin red line and got a bit thicker and black after a few days. I have it connected to a mac pro 5.1 with sierra and an AMD 280 GPU with a Dvi port.

Does anyone have similar experiences with a cinema display? Looking for a solution to fix this. Any advice highly appreciated. thnx in advance!

Lines are not good ;-{

If the line is static not moving that is a sign of a TAB error. Basically, there is a ribbon connection from the LCD panel to the driver board on the back of the display which has come disconnected from the glass or torn, this is a very fragile connection. There is nothing you can fix here as the connection is severed. Its also possible the driver (TCON) board has a problem as well. Again no good news as you'll have a hard time finding the board as it's not sold as a repair part.

Bottomline: You'll need a new screen assembly as the easiest repair, but even that maybe beyond what you want to spend. As a reference: 30" Apple Cinema Display Replacement Screen You might find a used one for less just be prepared it may have some flaws.

Thnx a lot for sharing your expertise Dan! Much appreciated. I was already looking for a second hand 30 inch. They go for around 200 to 225 euro. My thought though was that all the 30 inch might have a common certain lifespan. Most of the 30 inch displays are more than 10 years old. I suppose they all get issues now considering their age. I could not find any records of the average lifespan of these displays.....

Lifespan is always a tricky question as no one really monitors it. The best one will find MTBF data that the manufacturers list. But that’s based on the design of the components being used.
