If you need an exact replacement for some reason you can buy them from Apple. The last time I did this (about four months ago) the disk were $15 each. Mine was a two disk set for $30--YMMV. Hope this is of some help. Ralph

Ebay is probably the best place to buy. Depending on your exact model, your computer shipped with either 10.2 or 10.3. For the original OS discs, you're looking for the gray discs. You're looking for a listing that looks like this, but for the 17 inch Powerbook instead of the 12 inch: http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-PowerBook-G4-1...

You also should confirm that the discs are for your exact model (there were a variety of 17 inch Powerbooks released over the years). Mactracker is a great resource for figuring out your model and its specs: http://mactracker.dreamhosters.com/ Mactracker actually gives a four digit code in its listing of the original OS for a computer -- I believe that code is printed on the system discs that came with the computer. You can ask the seller to tell you the code on the discs he/she is selling before you buy.

All that being said, you don't need the original system disks if you just want to install OS X on the computer. You could buy a more recent version of OS X than can with your computer. According to Mactracker, all of the 17 inch Powerbooks can run 10.5.8, which is a much more advanced OS than what originally shipped with the computer. If you're buying OS 10.5 on ebay, just be sure you're buying a full install with the black discs. Disks that came with a different computer and have gray labels will not install on your computer.

Good luck!

another place to look for original OS discs for a particular model is a place called http://welovemacs.com

for example, here is their listing of OS discs for your model of PB G4

unfortunately their original OS distribution discs are very expensive but they seem to have a very large selection of original disc sets and also odd-ball hard to find apple accessories. if nothing else, you might at least be able to confirm the correct part number for the discs you need then search elsewhere for a better deal on them
