I think I may have killed my logic board?

Hi again. Still having problems with this 2007 iMac I was given.

I did get the Snow Leopard install disc to eject, and when I restarted it, it gave me the classic blinking "? file" symbol. I tried plugging in a USB with elementaryOS as well as inserting a DVD with the ISO file on it, and all I'm getting is a blank white screen. Holding "option" on startup doesn't work either.

I'm not really certain what to do now. If it's the logic board, I really am toast. =/ Any suggestions?

I wasn't even able to get the disc I put in to eject with the mouse button trick, so I used a business card to do the job. When I finally got the disc to spit out, it went from a white screen to the blinking "? file" again. Is there any hope for me?

@danj Not the GPU she's getting a flashing ? mark. The machine needs a system and her optical drive isn't working. Either get a firewire cable to install from another mac or another USB external source with a system on it she can install from.

Snowy -- Until you have the right tools to fix it. Leave it alone. Get that cable!

Okay, I'll see if I can order a cable. And if I'm seeing a flashing ? mark, does that mean my hard drive is still good most likely?

UPDATE: Just ordered a Firewire 800 cable (I made sure it matched both machines) from Amazon; it should get here Monday, Lord willing. As to making an El Capitan boot installer USB, that isn't a problem...I just don't know how well it's going to perform on this machine. Now, I'm off to look up how to use Target Disk Mode.

And I really hope my optical drive and USB ports haven't somehow died. ><

The question mark means your machine can not find a valid operating system. It does not mean your drive is good or bad. You won't know that until you can run Disk Utilities on it.

@mayer , what's the best way to ensure that you get your Mac to boot to the mode you want? I seem to have trouble getting the timing down on pushing the keyboard buttons that I need once I hear the Apple startup sound. Seems I either do it too late or too early and it doesn't get there. (I'm not trying to boot the machine now, I just need to know for later).

Well lets back up here a bit why are you trying to install elementaryOS?

Lets start things again... You tried to install Snow Leopard but it wouldn't load from the optical drive?

Do you have access to a second Mac system as well as a FireWire cable which you can connect the two systems together? For reference: Use target disk mode to share files between two Mac computers. In this case we're going to leverage the other system to reformat your internal drive Are you able to do that? If not your drive is toast not the system.

From the other Mac you'll also need to gain access to the OS installer (El Capitan OS-X 10.11) from the App store or if your friend already has it on his system that would be great! Now we'll need to setup a USB OS installer thumb drive following this guide: How to make a bootable OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer drive

Update (08/25/2017)

OK...

Let's go ahead and make that USB El Capitan installer so we can at least boot the system. The installer OS is a smaller footprint OS than the full El Capitan OS.

Does the system start up?

In order of your questions, here are my answers...

1, 2. iMac stuck at white screen, won't load from install DVD

3. Yes, I have a MacBook Pro running El Capitan, but I don't have a Firewire cable (and can't buy one right now), so I can't connect them both.

Things might work if I had that Firewire cable to do it from my MacBook, but I'm not sure.

Also, there's no way the iMac could support El Capitan; it's only got 1GB of RAM installed and it needs 2GB (I hope to upgrade that later as well). I wouldn't mind trying to make a bootable drive from a lower version, but only Snow Leopard can run on 1GB of RAM and my friend got these from a school that was getting rid of them. My only option is to pick up a retail copy of Snow Leopard or earlier (and I'll prolly go with Snow Leopard because it's cheapest). That is, if I haven't messed up the logic board or anything else. I've heard it happens with these machines, and I'm scared. =/ Also, if I sounded rude, I was in no way trying to be...just trying to be clear when I type.

I think someone has been telling you some horror story's that just don't have any truth to them.

Yes, drives do go bad and sometimes in the act of working on them you can stress them to finially fail, but they would have soon failed anyways!

No, you can't use the drive as a hammer or use the display as a cutting board :-}

So relax, breath deeply a few times, I'm sure we can get you going here.

I'm wondering if the GPU has died here (not her fault). Hoping we get to the desktop with the installer drive.
