Computer freezes and makes buzzing noise

My laptop has been freezing and making a buzzing noise randomly, usually when I'm streaming Netflix. Sometimes really often, but not always. The only way I can get the computer to work after this is by holding down the power button, but I'm sure that isn't good for the laptop to do all the time. Any ideas what might be causing this issue?

I have the same issue on my ASUS laptop, but it's not a physical sound the laptop makes , it's a sound being played as it freezes. If I have headphones plugged in, it plays the buzzing from the headphones.

Yeah. Same issue with my Dell laptop

Mine too, i was watching youtube and the screen froze and it started buzzing and then it turned black and its still buzzing for half an hour it happens once in a while when im watching a video

I'am also using Lenovo ideapad320, and this happened to me. Even before that, I was already experiencing slow system. So what I did was I always end some unnecessary tasks in the task manager. But it still happens to me when I'm playing a video... and this time, it makes buzz sounds. What do I do?

I have the exact same problem on my Hp laptop.

Im having the same trouble with my Asus laptop. Ive read through other comments and found a trend that the only one having this trouble are Asus Laptops. Also u dont have to turn off ur laptop to stop it, just sleep it and reopen it and it will start working again.

I found this problem in my ASUS K501J was due to a damaged Win7 O/S

It was solved by reformating the HD and reinsatalling win7 from the ground up. The Windows O/S repair option did NOT solve the problem.

Well, because of that you noticed there could be two options:

1st: Your fan is defect

In my opinion the most logical idea regarding your observations, especially after the buzzing is not present the whole time and got worse if you stream something (= the system is more under pressure which causes a faster fan speed). If the fan is going to die mostly the system gets hotter due to the missing cooling and has no option to cool it down - this ends up in a slower system and finally freezing / sudden shut downs. In this case you also should notice a clear heat up of your system overall.

2nd: Your HDD is defect

Also the HDD could make that sound, but - if the system runs fairly normally under less load - I don't think it's the issue here. A defect HDD is shown in a overall slow system, sudden and sporadic freezes or finally no boot (HDD not detected).

Hello, I'm not sure if the my problem is identical to the one described higher, but the symptoms are identical. I want to clarify that buzzing sound is not created physically, as a fan would create. The buzzing sound happens only if laptop is creating sound in the moment of freeze. I've got freezes without sound, when nothing was playing at that moment. The system is ok as far as I can tell, I wouldn't say it's slow. Freezes are happening for some time, than there are none of them for half a year. Sounds a bit like laptop poltergeist :)

I have this same problem with my Asus K501J, but only when I'm streaming video. (stuttering sound and lock-up)

I just replaced my CPU fan as suggested by above answer.

Also, downloaded and reinstalled audio and lan drivers.

Changed Processor power management to 100%.

Still no solution so far.

I have the exact same problem with my Lenovo ideapad320. I used to hold down the power button but I have fornd it is much better to leave it buzzing until it shuts itself off (this could take up to 20 minutes). I feel it’s much better for the computer although it has not stopped the problem.

I just think your laptop has a bad cpu. I reccomend not doing too many things that take up a lot of cpu at once. I have this problem but if i dont run much it wont happen. Also when it does give it a 15 minute break after it shuts off.

I had the similar issue in my asus laptop. I contacted support team and they advised me to update my bios to the latest version. I wasn’t able to update my drivers as well due to old version of bios. After I updated my bios and installed all the updates, the issue was fixed. I have been using NetFlix/Udemy/YouTube without any issues on my machine ever since.
