Can I replace an MB Pro uppercase and keep the keyboard?

I had something fall on the upper right hand corner of my MB Pro, and in addition to taking out the screen it also dented the uppercase and squished the disk slot enough to keep it from ejecting. Everything else seems to be in good working order, including the keyboard, so I'm going to give it a go at replacing the screen and uppercase. Can I replace the uppercase without replacing the keyboard? I've seen uppercases without keyboards for sale so I'm assuming its a thing, but I wanted to make sure since I haven't been able to find any specifics.

Thanks...

S. C.

If it is the pre-retina model you have, then you can replace the keyboard on its own. Apple are very specific about the way they provide their parts, so they include the keyboard as part of the top case unit, but we sell both the top cases with their keyboards included, and the keyboards separate to the aluminium chassis.

This makes the options for doing rebuilds much greater.

Just be aware that different keyboard languages have different shaped keyboards, so you need to make sure you get the right shape for your language. But we have them listed here as a reference.

The 13" models keyboard is held in with about 48x PH000 (small philips) screws, so take your time on this process, as you dont want to strip any of the screws, otherwise you'll get movement when you try and type.

Make sure you've mention the right range though, as the retina machines have a very different built type, and instead of screws they used metal lugs to hold the keyboard in place... a completely different ball game there.

I hope this helps.

Sorry to tell you, you won't be able to salvage the keyboard if that is what you were thinking. You'll need to get either the full assembly or get the upper case and populate it with a keyboard and the other missing parts depending on what you get.

Replacing the upper case assembly (swapping out the display in the process) is one of the harder jobs. Take your time and you should be fine!
