How to replace LCD cable?

Hello,

I've been having the issue with the LCD flickering screen. Trying several times to disconnect and reconnect the LCD cable to the motherboard, I end up broking one pin and now the screen is all black even when the PC is on.

I've seen on eBay that LCD cables for this computer exist, but I can't find anywhere how to replace them. I haven't tried to disassembly it yet, but it looks like the LCD assembly is a glued piece and is very hard to disassembly and reassembly the cable.

Is it really as hard as I think? How would you go on to replace the LCD cable?

Or is it better to replace the whole assembly, even if it's way more expensive?

It's an old laptop I'm not using anymore and I would like to spend the less I can to fix that.

Thanks,

Francesco

First hook it up to an external monitor to determine if the initial problem actually was the cable. There was a recall on the GPU on this particular model after a class action law suit.

Hello Mayer,

That's not the problem: I tried connecting to an HDMI display and it works flawlessly.

It's not easy to test if the initial problem was the cable, but now it is for sure since one of the pin is broken.

Since cable sells for 20€ while the monitor is around 250€, if it's possible to replace the cable only I will give it a try.

Do you have any experience doing that?

Follow this guide to remove the display assembly.

Then on the bottom of the screen, slide the black plastic clutch cover (Round/U-shaped plastic covering the bottom of the screen) parallel to the screen towards one of the edges, then lift up the side nearest the edge. The rest will follow. Don't force anything at anytime. Unscrew the plastic antenna. Beneath it you should see where the LCD cable is attached. It is covered with black tape that you have to peel very cautiously. There may be slight variations for different screen models, but the above is the gist of how to do it.

To reassemble, place the U cover must at the same place where you lifted it, then slide back into position. If you examine the clutch cover & the screen where it sits, you'll see grooves. This is how/where it locks into place.

Also flash a light from behind the screen (through the Apple) before and after trying the new cable, when the computer is supposedly booting. Do you in any of those cases see any image (the Apple)?

Last note: battery must be disconnected first and reconnected last, whatever you're doing inside your computer.
