Replacement screen doesn't work, is there any way to diagnose?

I got a replacement screen from a reputable seller and it was installed perfectly.

When the phone was first turned on (just by plugging in the charger) it was displaying the charging icon (dimly) for a second then the display would die with no further display even after pressing all the buttons, I pulled out the charger and plugged it back in and it did the same thing. Now after a few more times it's just a black screen.

I've heard that sometimes the motherboard doesn't activate the screen?

The phone will turn on and I can hear it when I press the volume up and down and I could hear the camera after pressing a combination of buttons. I don't think the touch is working. The back and other button light up. The home button seems to be functional.

Is there anyway to diagnose it? Can replacement screens reject motherboards from different regions? I've tried it on a different motherboard and the same thing happens.

Two things spring to mind either:

a: its a defective screen, have you tried an alternative one

b: did you disconnect the battery before unplugging the screen ribbon cables, failure to do this can cause the backlight IC to blow resulting in a very dim image.

I haven't tried another one yet, but I have ordered a second hand screen assembly which the seller guarantees to be working with warranty so that will hopefully check whether or not it's the phone or the screen.

I made sure that everything was plugged in before plugging in the battery connector.

I did plug it into the charger without the frame making sure not to touch anything while doing so. I'm not sure if that could hurt it? I then clicked it into it's frame and screwed it down, still the same result.

Did you get LCD only or LCD plus frame replacement which means you pryed the battery?

I got the LCD/Digitiser without the plastic frame it sits on and yes I had to remove the battery

What's the model number for the screen and what is the model number of the phone?

If you are trying to install SM-G900x screens onto a SM-G901x board you will have problems, it will not work.

Well I got another screen and it worked straight away. So obviously it was a defective screen. I'll try and get my money back. Good to know it wasn't anything on the motherboard. It was a perfect screen with all original markings and protection so it's hard to know what's wrong with it.

Hold a flashlight up to the display, to see if you can faintly see the LCD, that means the backlight is out. You've got a second one coming, so that's kind of nice, even if it crappy, it'll help to alleviate some problems. It's possible the good reputable one you bought, isn't good. Foxconn has a 70% failure rate? So Apple only buys 30% of their displays, so I heard. If you can get the new display back off, you could possibly exchange it for a new one. Check for any damage on it. In the meantime the cheap one will get you through. Me? I got a reasonably crappy third party display on my 6S right now, waiting until a new shipment to try ones I think could be better
