Screen switches between being being blurry and perfect.

Have a Macbook pro A1229 bought 2007. Lately the screen suddenly becomes all pixelated (looks like every other pixel is gone) and then as suddenly as that happens it switches back to looking perfect.

It just switched back to looking proper again after 2 days of "pixelated display".

If I connect to an external display it looks perfect all the time (even though the built in screen looks horrible).

So with that in mind and since it suddenly switches back and forth I'm assuming there is a glitch somewhere. Is there some way of tracking where this glitch is so I might get away from paying apple 310 bucks to replace the screen?

Really looks like a failing LCD panel. Open Terminal in Applications -> Utilities, copy and paste this command line:

ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

This will identify the LCD panel model installed in your MBP. Check on ebay for a used one.

So how would you distinguish between if it is the LCD panel that is failing as opposed to lets say a glitch somewhere?

Just wondering since now it has been running fine for 3 days. And when I've had LCDs die on me before that has been, lets say, a more permanent problem. :)

Well I don't know a software glitch that can cause a "pixelated display" so it should be a hardware problem related to the MBP video components. Since the Mac has a normal video on an external monitor then we can exclude the graphic card as potential culprit. The two other possibilities are the LVDS cable (bad cable or loose connection) or the LCD panel (could be an intermittent electronic board issue). To be really sure you'll have to bring the computer to a tech. Sorry if I can't help...
