Why does my iPod skip songs or play wrong artist?

I use a macbook and my previous 80gb classic ipod never gave me problems like my new 160GB does.

Ive only had this ipod classic 160GB for about 4 months, the battery wasnt holding a charge anymore, I had it replaced. Now, it wont recognize some songs and wont import them. I tried manually syncing them about 100 songs at a time and it took them all.

My bigger problem now is that when i choose a song, itll freeze for about 20 seconds and them skip to a completely different song. Or if i play an artist, example- U2, itll read U2, the joshua tree on the display but itll be playing something completely different like Lupe Fiasco. Or the songs will cut off.

I played them all from my itunes library and they all play just fine. I played them from the ipod library on itunes and they are also fine, but once i diconnect it and play it in the car or wherever, The problems persist

Ive restored my ipod several times, and the problem keeps getting worse. Now, only half of some of the images of the albums appear but the other half looks like static. I have also ran the disk utility and verified disks but apparently everything seems ok.

A friend suggested something about repairing something on it on the computer, where itll magnetize something on the hard disk again, but im not sure exactly what it is or how to do it

Is this something I could fix myself with some help from your replies?

Thanks

Ivan I just did a little bit more research and found out that some of the rives are locked withan APlle password to prevent using the chaeper Zif Drives as external har ddrives. This may be why your hard drive refuses to be formatted. Do you know any Linux at all? I found something that could help you out. Check http://www.computing.net/answers/windows... and look for the posting by BMN12345 I think if you follow his instructions up to the Vista restart it might just work. I know you are frustrated but look at it as a good learning experience for all of us...hang in there and good luck.

Here is a link to another recovery and more program. Good ideas in the blog as well.http://blog.atola.com/restoring-factory-...

and here is some recovery software that you can download as a demo for Mac. http://www.ipoddatarecovery.biz/

think this is great research and links oldturkey- you haven't got the credit for the solution, and I can't mark you up either! Hope others see your work and mark it up- you deserve the credit

Just wondering if it was still under warranty. If so, I'd replace it. If not, have you tried a hard reset? A hard reset occurs when the iPod reboots. This happens when you hold the play and center button down for a few seconds. The iPod resets, rebooting with the Apple symbol on the screen. Wait a while and then turn it back on. The reset may fix your iPods skipping songs. Music glitches, pauses and skips on your hard drive based iPod can also mean a fragmentation. Do you have a disk utility program? Try a program like Norton Systemworks (PC), Drive Genius (Mac) or Disk Warrior (Mac) and run the defragmentation feature on your iPod, as if it were an external drive. Depending on how badly your hard drive is fragmented, you may need to erase your iPod and start over. You might want to check here http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Stop-iPod... and here http://www.wikihow.com/Defragment-an-iPo... and here for for more info http://forums.ilounge.com/windows-ipod-d... Those are of course my 2 cents only but may be worth a try. Good luck to you.

Thank You. I tried what you suggested. When i start the defrag on the ipod hard drive, it says it cannot be defragmented and it cancels itself.

Is there other programs that may help?

I dont have warranty on the ipod, I didnt buy the coverage at the time of purchase, my thinking was, "its a very new, expensive ipod, how can it possibly mess up at that price ", and i was wrong apparently haha

Hey Ivan, I am not familiar with any MAC so I am not the best person to ask about which software to use :)for windows I would suggest http://ipod.software.informer.com/downlo... as well as http://www.copytrans.net/copytransdoctor... iPods are great, just a little temperamental but still the best players around. They just take a little TLC and I am sure you'll get yours going again. :)

A couple of things for you to try. I guess you may have tried these avenues already but I will mention them just in case.

Did you try running the apple diagnostics?

Hold up/centre buttons to reset the ipod. When the apple logo pops up, hold left/centre buttons to get the diagnostic menu. In the IO section you can check the disk (4th item I think). Unfortunately some 160gb only get 2 options and checking the disk isn't one of them. Under windows you could try reformatting your ipod.

Right click 'my computer' >manage>disk management. Find your ipod in the top or bottom panes then right click and select format. Do it as NTFS, afterwards restore the ipod through Itunes and it will change it to FAT32. Again not sure about Macs. The only other thing I can think of before replacing the drive is a low level format here is some for Mac's http://www.hddoctor.net/how-to-low-level...

I tried, It does not help at all.
