I bought a Pokemon Red GBC cartridge for repairing, but it won't boot.

Hello!

I'm having difficulty with a GBC cartridge that I bought recently to repair, but so far, I've had no luck with it. It will boot to the Gameboy logo screen, but the Nintendo copyright logo at the bottom of the screen is always messed up.

So far, I've attempted cleaning the contacts, but it still does the same thing. However, I've been looking at the board closely (and referencing other pictures of what appears to be the same cartridge) and beyond missing the battery (which should be easy enough to replace), it's missing an odd forked-looking piece in the upper left corner.

I've outlined the space in red on this one, and the one below has no markings on it whatsoever for visibility's sake.

And here's one without the flash on.

Thank you so much guys!

Can these carts even run without a battery?

I think so, but I wouldn't swear to it. If they're like other cartridges, they can boot and play, but they can't write save information.

There is no component missing on the PCB, some cartridges have something here, some don't, just something removed in development (see picture of another Pokemon Red cartridge).

All you can do is check the joints on the chips, to make sure all the legs are making contact. Maybe solder a battery, in case this is interfering (although it should work fine, just won't save, since that's it's only function). If none of this works, the ROM is corrupt and needs re-flashing, something which is probably possible but I am not familiar with this.
