Time limit with water damage?

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering is there a general time limit for fixing water damage on an iPhone? We clean them in store with our ultra sonic and then carry out board level repairs. We have a really high success rate but the majority of our customers have only suffered water damage days and sometimes hours before coming to us.

I only ask because I'm wondering if it's worth purchasing water damaged handsets on eBay and fixing them for resale. We bought one a few weeks back and got it 100% working again but that was only damaged around 3 weeks before we purchased it.

Another quick question about water damage is can it spread to the bga chips?? How often are the ic chips affected by water damage as I've only ever seen blown capacitors and resistors.

Sam Harrison, That is probably unpredictable to answer, there are a lot of variables like was the phone on when water damage occurred (shorting components), did the owner keep powering on and charging the device(shorting, overheating damaging bga chips, etc.). Water can work it self under all sorts of places and then the corrosion starts also, especially from salt water. It sounds so far you have been getting phone's with out much corrosion damage which in a lot of cases is not feasible to repair. Sorry I can not answer all your questions but hope some. I am sure others will also have more info. to add. Good luck.

There isn't a pre-determined time. All I can say is hopefully the owner turned off the phone and had not attempted to either restart phone or charge it.
