Replaced battery & now it's cycling Logo, Sad Face & Low Battery

I replaced the battery on the 40GB Mono Chrome iPod 4th Gen. I followed the guide to the T. Now I have it back together and plugged it into my Mac. It's cycling through the Apple Logo, then the Sad Face with the support url, and then to the Low Battery symbol. It stays on the low battery symbol for about 3-5 minutes then starts over.

I took it apart again and checked all the connections. I also heard if you gently whack it on the right side (while it's facing up) it might stop the sad face. I tried both of these and still have the same symptoms.

I also tried plugging it into an A/C outlet and it just cycled through the Apple Logo and the Sad Face. It didn't show the battery.

Help this is for a client of mine and I've never had this problem before. Thanks

Eric, give this a try. I had identical problems after changing my batteries. Very frustrating but keep working with it. The first step is to to perform an iPod reset after you've completed the hold switch. To perform a reset, press and hold the following combination of buttons for 10 seconds: Menu and Select (Select is the center button)When you have performed the reset, you'll see an Apple logo. Let go of the button combination that performed the reset. Now hold down the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons at the same time. This forces your iPod into disk mode. If the iPod fails to mount restart the computer. Now that it's in disk mode, the iPod should say "Disk Mode" at the top of the screen and "OK to disconnect" near the bottom. The computer should now read the iPod. If it doesn't, try another USB or FireWire port.To get the iPod out of disk mode reset the iPod again. Let us know if this helped and if it made a difference. Thanks for trying but I couldn't get that to work. When it's plugged into the computer (I've tried 2 different cables & 2 different ports) it only shows the low battery icon when trying to do a restart, nothing else happens. After holding the select & menu button for about 10 seconds it just blinks once but continues to show the low battery icon.

I thought it might be a loose connection, so I opened it up and looked at all the connections. I took out the HD & the ribbon cable for the HD & put them back in. I plugged it into my computer WITHOUT putting it back together & I got the missing folder icon. I was happy because this was progress so I put it back together. As soon as I put it back together the orignal problem resumed. I tried this about 5 more times, unplugging the hard drive & the ribbon cable and plugging them back in & hooking it up to my Mac and got the exact same results. I'm starting to think that it is either the ribbon cable that I need to replace or the hard drive

What are your thoughts?


Eric, sounds like you are having a hard drive issue. Looking at the error of putting it in disk mode, it does look like it. If you do a lot of repairs on these you will find that the drives do get really sensitive and I have had some fail right after I did some other work i.e. battery display etc. I am now seriously thinking of converting the iPods to CF card and have one that actually works nice. It is a difference in weight as well as battery life. Lots of info about that out there. Sorry about your drive and I know it ain't of luck.

I have had a few with the hard drive problems That is why I went ahead and invested in a USB-to_Zif adapter. It allows my to check the drives for faults etc. Handy little tool to have. The other issues that I had with 4th G iPod always happened after battery replacement is the issue that you are having. I usually charge my iPods on a fire-wire wall charger for about 2hrs before I do anything else with them. Can you get your iPod in disk mode or diagnostic mode at all without being plugged in to your computer.

Just in case, here is the how to. The diagnostic might help you out to determine what is not working.

Fourth-generation iPod, iPod Photo, and iPod mini: Click-wheel iPods don’t offer a button combination to scan the hard drive. Rather, you must access this function through the iPod’s Diagnostic screen (which I explain at great length later in this chapter). Use this combination when you want to check the integrity of the iPod’s hard drive. This test can take 15 to 20 minutes, so be patient. Be sure to plug your iPod into the power adapter when you perform this test so that the iPod doesn’t run out of juice before the scan is complete. If the scan shows no problems, a check mark appears

over the disk icon. To return your iPod to regular use, press Play.

  1. Diagnostic mode.

First three generations of the white iPod: Reset the iPod. At the Apple logo, press and hold Previous, Next, and Select.

Fourth-generation iPod, iPod Photo, and iPod mini: Reset the iPod. At the Apple logo, press and hold Select and Previous. Diagnostic mode includes 16 tests for the first three generations of the white iPod, 19 tests for the iPod mini, 21 tests for the fourth-generation iPod, and a mess o’ tests for the iPod Photo that may help you determine what’s wrong.

Thanks for getting back to me. I was able to get the iPod into Disk Mode. I of course was really excited. I tried to restore it with iTunes and got this error "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored because it was busy." I tried restarting my computer, switching USB ports, and unplugging any other USB devices. I got the same error every time. Being discouraged I took it to the Apple Store. The guy barely gave it a glance. He said it's the hard drive. I asked him if he's positive it's the hard drive, he said yes. So at this point I'm ready to buy a new hard drive, but I'm just going to wait on you to see what you think. Thanks again, you've been a big help.
