Hi, I've recently been experiencing a black screen problem with my phone. It's able to receive calls and messages and such and the screen is responsive. However the screen is black and so I cannot see what I'm doing.
So I wanted to ask is this due to the back light ? Or would I need to replace the LCD to fix this?
Any answers given would be great !

This is most likely a damaged LCD.
The way to tell if it's the backlight is shine a flashlight on the screen when you think it's on and see if you can see faint images. If you don't see anything, it's the LCD

Yes when I shine a flashlight at it I can see my message notifications, so would this be a problem with the back light ?
Ok, so first I would use the flashlight to test if the touch works, if it does then you can unlock the phone to back it up. Then I would try and track down a repair shop that does logic board repairs. If they determine it's a screen issue then it looks like you can get replacement screens online for around $50
Thank you so much for your help ! I'll try and have a look and comment if I get any success. Also it's too difficult for me to unlock my phone and back it up as it's pretty dark. But if I get a logic board repair will this affect my data/ saved information on my phone ?

The "screen" is generally a combination LCD, glass panel, back light and digitizer all in one. Theoretically you shouldn't lose any data on either repair, but it's always good to have it backed up just in case something happens.

What happen? Have you dropped it?
If you can hear the phone working ... calling, receiving text messages, etc most likely is a LCD problem.
If you dismantle it, you should check the LCD connection first, maybe use isopropyl alcohol to clean the connection a little bit, only then I'll say for sure LCD is faulty.
