Laptop screen won't turn on.

I have a lenovo laptop and when I turn it on the screen won't turn on but I know the laptop is on because I can hear the fan and the start up sounds. I've tried taking out the battery and holding down the power button but this doesn't work. Any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it.

Could someone create a video of how to repair this? I have tried repairing it on my own by removing and unconnecting the hardware but would be very grateful if someone could link a repair video to here!

Hi,

First try the torch trick to see if it is a LCD backlight (or lid switch) problem.

Turn on the laptop and when you think that it should have booted all the way to the Windows desktop (check HDD activity light has settled down), shine a torch at an angle close to the screen and check if you can detect the Windows desktop image. (you may have to peer closely to see it, as it will be faint)

If you can detect the desktop image then you either have a faulty LCD screen backlight power circuit, a faulty lid switch or a faulty LCD screen.

If you cannot detect the desktop image then connect an external monitor to the laptop and see if it displays OK when the laptop is turned on.

If it doesn't then you either have a faulty GPU or a faulty motherboard.

If it does then you either have a faulty video flex cable, faulty video flex cable connection at either end (motherboard or screen) or a faulty LCD screen.

Update (02/08/2017)

Hi @coder1 ,

In a way it is good news, at least your motherboard (or GPU which most probably means the motherboard) is not faulty.

It could be that the video flex cable is faulty or has come loose or that the screen itself is faulty.

Here is a link to the service manual for your laptop. Scroll to p.61 to view the necessary pre-requisites and then the procedure for replacing the LCD panel.

Since you have to do most of the procedures to check the cable and if it is not loose or has been fractured, (usually around the hinge area where it passes through from the base to the lid) then most probably you will have to replace the screen.

On p.92 are the part numbers for the various screens available for the model. Once you have determined the correct part number (item #2 in list, it is also usually printed on the back of the screen), just Google the number only - nothing else, to get results for suppliers of the screen.

If you think that you can do the replacement yourself, I suggest that when you do and if you are having problems with any part of the repair and are becoming frustrated, STOP. Take a break, think through the problem and calmly start again. This forum is full of people who have said that they ripped out connectors or broke components in frustration, causing more problems than when they started. This is not to put you off doing it, far from it. It's just a suggestion.

If you feel that doing this is too daunting, then I recommend that you contact 3 reputable, professional laptop repair services and ask for a quote to repair the laptop. I suggest 3, that way if their estimates are close in price then you will have a truer idea of the real cost of the repair, (and also you should know the retail cost of the LCD panel already).

Good luck with the repair.

Thanks for the reply. I tried the torch trick but I couldn't detect the desktop image. I plugged the laptop into an external monitor and it displays ok on there. Any ideas on what I can do now?

Hi. I don't know if you were able to fix this problem, but I wanted to share my experience with this. I setup multiple laptops at a time. I had a bunch stacked and was configuring them one last time before I deployed them. On the second to last one, the monitor did not want to turn on. I used an external monitor and it showed no other monitors available or any problems in the device manager. After some failed troubleshooting I powered down the laptop and moved it to another spot and setup the last laptop. It worked before, but when I powered it on the monitor didn't turn on. I tried an external monitor and it worked. I checked the previous laptop and suddenly the monitor worked. I deciced to take the last laptop, unplug it from the external monitor, then move it. The moment I moved it off the stack of laptops, the laptop monitor worked again.

Hi,

i really don't know what would cause this to happen.

Were the "stack" of laptops powered on?

If the laptops were powered on were they in 'hibernation' perhaps and failed to come out of hibernation when you opened the lid

Can you simulate the problem again?

It could be that the laptop being on top of the other laptops caused the lid closed sensor to trigger and cause the laptops to think that you had closed the lid. (usually smaller laptops would have a magnetic type sensor)

Such as Acer b115's. I work in a second hand computer store and hve had a few run ins with machines that do that.

Hi, I have a lenovo G51 and have a similar problem,

Symptoms:

- Monitor does sometimes work but most of the time I have the system boot as black screen and when it turns on I Close the lid wait for it to go to sleep and reopen it (several times) and it works.

- when watching videos it sometimes go white for a moment with no apparent reason and back to normal

- External monitor always works fine.

Now the old trick of closing the lid after boot doesn't work but I just discovered another trick that works witch is closing the lid just after pressing the power botton and then reopening it.

I have no idea what the problem is and I don't know how long those tricks will work.
