Has anyone encountered slight differences in upper case machining?

Hello all,

I'm swapping out the upper case of a MBP 15" Retina mid-2012 (A1398 EMC 2512). The part we ordered (and double-checked the accuracy of) has *slight* differences in machining, especially around the headphone jack and left hinge area (near the magsafe board). See pic:

Has anyone encountered this issue? We're not sure if we were shipped the wrong part, if this is a shoddy third-party product made incorrectly, or something else we're not thinking of.

Here are the two differences in closer detail. My replacement has no rails to guide and hold the headphone jack component as it screws into the upper case (left image). The original does (right image).

My replacement also has a screw hole with a raised collar next to a flush screw hole. In the original, these holes are switched (see pic below). These screw holes are where the rubber heat sink cover screws in and where the rubber cap covers the screw near the magsafe board. Check the picture, it'll make a lot more sense when you see it.

Any input is highly appreciated. Thanks,

Ross

I think that there is a good chance that you were shipped an upper case for a A1398 2013/2014/2015 (I'm not sure). If it were a non-retina top case, it would not have an aluminum dust vent or side air intake as pictured in both top cases.

Sam, I think you're right. I checked out the MPB Retina 15" late-2013 teardown, and that topcase looks like what we got. Here's the teardown for that model, and the two features I was concerned with (headphone jack housing and screw holes near magsafe) appear to match the replacement we received (which was the wrong part). https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig...

P.S. PROBLEM SOLVED... Instead of sending us a replacement topcase for MBP 15" Retina mid-2012, we received a topcase for MBP 15" Retina late-2013. Easy to see how they were mixed up... the differences are minute. Below is the proof (compare those pics to mine above)

My first reaction to this is that the replacement you got is from this machine:

Apple MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.3 15" Mid-2012 Specs

Identifiers: Mid-2012 15" - MD103LL/A - MacBookPro9,1 - A1286 - 2556*

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012

Not the Retina.

Good hunch, but it doesn't seem to be the (top) case. *pun intended, ha* The link here to the teardown of that model has both a removable (not glued) battery, among other differences that suggest it's an entirely different machine. https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig...

This replacement topcase we got has just the slightest of differences, which is what really has befuddled us. We sent the part back to the supplier for a refund, so I guess we may never know what it was... But thank you for your input!
