Why can't I get service on 2G cellular "no service"

My wife's iPhone 3G was a hand me down from our 26 year old daughter, it was available following an 18 month contract upgrade and has been unlocked by O2 which is confirmed by iTunes. It is in mint condition apart from a small crack in the rear casing top left, this is only visible because it is white.

The phone works well on 3g and wi-fi but 2g (cellular) connection response is 'no service'.

I have tried swapping SIMs with my iPhone which can find 2g but same problem, not a SIM problem.

Have tried resetting network and even erasing everything and restoring, even going to 'recover mode' once.

I am pulling out what hair I have left, can anyone tell me if this is a mechanical or a software issue, the carrier (Vodafone) claims it is the phone but my daughter says it was fully functional with her carrier (O2).

I have even replaced the entire dock unit including the antenna, no difference.

Oh, even dowloaded the configurator to set up another 'profile'.

HELP!!

just an idea but have you checked cellular coverage in your area for this?

I am eternally grateful for your response in this great big wilderness called the world wide web but please read what I said: "I have tried swapping SIMs with my iPhone which can find 2g but same problem"

Does that fact that we get 3G on Sure Signal mean that both antenna are fine but for some reason the 2G signal isn't being received on one of the phones due to a handset problem?

I am mystified..

is there a difference in operating software for the 2 phones?

ps. my apologies, your sim in your wife's phone finds 2g?

It is possible that your carrier does not have a 2G network, and only supports 3G or higher. Even though your phone is capable of operating on 2G, it won't pick up a network that doesn't exist.

As I said in my first post: "I have tried swapping SIMs with my iPhone which can find 2g".

Which carrier in the UK does not have a 2g network?

Check on How do I unlock? answers and what he found. I believe that he discovered that Bell Canada does not support 2g You might be having the same setup in the UK. I would hate to see you try to fix something that is not fixable from your end. Just my 2 cents and good luck to you.

I'm having the exact same problem. I tried everything you mentioned before except changing the antenna. I took my iPhone which is a 3GS to a repair shop and they told me that it has the 2G receiver broken, and that it can't be fixed, but still I'm think there have to be a solution for that. If you find a way to fix it send me an e-mail to jairomartinez2608@gmail.com I'll do the same if you let me yours.
