Crashes after cracked digitizer replacement

I replaced a cracked digitizer on the iPhone 3GS and it started working fine, however sometimes the phone crashes - the screen goes suddenly blank and when connected to iTunes it appears in the recovery mode.

However I found out that after a few minutes and several hard resets (Home+Power button) the phone switches back on and works normally, i.e. until the next crash.

So I'm wondering, whether it might be the wrong digitizer, like for 3G and it's causing the problems? I bought the front panel assembly from ebay, so not sure about the quality.

All the connectors and cables seem to be fine.

Is there a pattern to the crashing? Mine only happened during text/calls.

Can't really see the pattern. Once it happened during video playback, another time during Angry Birds game, and then while reading a book.

I have a feeling that it happens when the graphics is in heavy use.

My first reaction was to restore the iOS, which I did 3 or 4 times, but then I found that the phone can be switched back on after some time

Honestly, I have no idea about the digitizer, but crashing during graphics-heavy use sounds like a heat-aggravated electrical short. I've seen it in other electronics where there's a break in a wire or connection, but it only completely severs when it's either too hot or too cold.

Have you noticed if the phone is warmer when it crashes? Might want to consider, instead of a "reset", just turning the phone off for a few minutes. That might help narrow down the symptoms. I'm betting that it boots right back up again if you just leave it off for 5 minutes or so.

While this may narrow down possible causes, I realize it still isn't a solution...but it should at least give you an idea as to WHERE the short might be happening. Refer to the teardown guide for your phone to see where the components are located. Try to determine where the heat (if any) is coming from. (I'm NOT suggesting you take it apart...just use the guide for placement reference.)

Hey, Jerry, thanks for your comment, it is exactly the way you describe! The phone does heat up a little, so it looks like the digitizer has nothing to do with the symptoms but rather something happened inside when it fell down. And it boots in a normal way after it's been off for a few minutes.

I'm going to get a second opinion at a different cervice centre, maybe it can still be fixed if they find where the short is.

replacing logicboards is the easy way out for some places, they will repair only the hardware and not small components, best of luck with the next repairman!

Yeah, it's starting to sound like the logic board may have cracked. A hairline fracture is all it takes.
