Home Button Replacement Doesn't Work

Hi all,

I replaced the home button on an iPhone 6 Plus I purchased. I know I lose touch ID when I replace, however, this button won't even function as a home button. I'm on the setup screen and it says press the home button to open and when I press it nothing happens. Is there something I'm missing here? Does Apple entirely disable replacement home buttons? I've had this issue once before with a 6S but the user didn't mind so I left it like that.

A generic Home button should work fine.

The obvious question is whether the replacement part you ordered is good. Small parts are notoriously hit or miss. Did you order it from a reputable vendor or eBay/AMZN?

Assuming your button is good, I would check the following:

  • Is the bracket properly installed (see step 19 of the iPhone 6+ Home Button guide)?
  • Is the flex or button damaged in any way?
  • Check the FPC connectors between the Home Button flex and the Extension flex that goes behind the back-plate (see step 22). The connectors may be improperly seated or damaged as they are quite delicate.

one way to see if your button isn't working or if it isn't making solid contact against the bracket. You should feel a click when depressing the button, but you can always pop the screen up, then take off the home button bracket. Don't disconnect anything else. Then using a fingernail or something to depress the back of the button while pushing on the front. This should wake up the phone, or other home button functions. If it didn't work then you may have bought a defective button, or the cable that runs along the back plate has been damaged. That is also replaceable. This happens sometimes when pealing it off the original screen where it is taped to. I heat mine up when removing that part and the home button on the 6, just with a hairdryer. Note do not unplug or plug anything in without disconnecting the battery first.
