Applyied Thermal paste, noticing higher than normal temps, is this tem

Applied IC Diamond 24K Thermal paste to my MacBook Pro 15" Retina Quad-Core.Used the small pea method. Noticing CPU temps idle at 60-80C, 90's C with a load. Does this particular thermal paste take time to settle in to work properly or should I reapply using less paste?

Update (11/30/2016)

Fixed it!

Reapplied thermal past in an "X" like pattern on the CPU and GPU. Idle temps in the low 40's.

those temps don't seem completely out of line, did you happen to record what the temps were before you did anything?

Look up your CPU model on Intel's website for info on operating temperatures.

As an aside, is there a program that will monitor the real-time clock frequency of a CPU under OSX?

Last I saw Intel was rather mum on how hot CPUs have to get before the are thermally throttled back.

Did not record what the temps were before applying the paste.

Thanks, Great Idea. I'll research this particular CPU ands what the operating temps in this particular unit

Tim - Here's a way to monitor the CPU's clocking: Intel® Power Gadget.

You can also use Activity Monitor to see CPU's usage which I think is more useful for most: OS X: Activity Monitor shows one CPU Usage graph on systems with more than four cores
