Replaced Hard Drive...Fan revs up to 5500rpm still

I had a 1TB Seagate and installed a 2TB Seagate Barracuda. The temp sensor fit into the new drive perfectly, and I thought all was fine.

As soon as the computer turns on, the hdd fan starts to slowly creep up, and up, until it's eventually at full blast, even though the temp stays stable at 33. Any ideas?

Don't want to short the sensor if I don't have to and a software solution doesn't sound ideal.

Shut down the computer and unplug it for 15 seconds, replug and then press the start button, it may have gone into diagnostic mode and that will cause the fans to run at full speed.

Next try booting from your DVD and go to Utilities -> Disk utility and unmount the hard drive and see if the fan persists.

Reset the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

Boot to the ASD by inserting your system installation disk and holding down the D key upon restart. If the test fails, replace the component it tells you failed.

Yet another update. This one is to warn people to really pay close attention to the drive that is in their iMac. First, and foremost, the 1TB Seagate drive linked in this guide Sostituzione hard drive con SSD iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 ed EMC 2374 da 27" will not work properly in a late 2009 27" iMac, model EMC 2374 quad core i5. After my last post I ordered another drive, this time from http://www.macsales.com/. If you look at my last post I determined that the Seagate model# ST31000524AS, again linked in the above guide, had some slight differences from the drive I pulled out of my iMac, which was a Seagate model# ST31000528AS. So, I went to http://www.macsales.com/ and specifically ordered the ST31000528AS. To my surprise they shipped me another ST31000524AS. I called them and explained this, explained why I specifically ordered the ST31000528AS, and was told it was a technical issue and they transferred me. This is where it gets good..The "tech" seemed less than interested in what I was saying and finally interrupted me and stated "you have to buy a replacement from Apple." I asked why they shipped me the wrong drive and he stated that it's the only one they stock and I was out of luck, despite the fact that their site lists both models. He was really a jerk about it. The point here is that the guide from iFixit, while very helpful, does not link the correct drive for the late 2009 27" iMac. The ST31000524AS will not work properly and the hard drive fan will rev up to 4.5k RPM or higher. Resetting the SMC or any other troubleshooting steps will not resolve the problem. These drives are different and they have different firmware.

ST31000524AS has Firmware JC45 and was linked in the iFixit guide as compatible with late 2009 27" iMacs

ST31000528AS has Firmware AP24 and is the actual drive that shipped with the late 2009 27" iMac

Do NOT buy the ST31000524AS drive if you have a late 2009 27" iMac. It will NOT work properly. I still think this is an awesome site, but in my opinion the guide needs to note these differences. I am now out almost $200 until I RMA two drives. In the meantime I am left booting from an external USB until I can find the correct replacement. Can we possibly add an addendum to this guide Sostituzione hard drive con SSD iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 ed EMC 2374 da 27" pointing out these differences? This has really been a pain in the butt and I wouldn't like to see anyone else go through this.

Thanks,

William

Guys I had the same problem and found an app for it.

It's called HDD Fan Control and has been made specifically for iMac with this problem.

Check it out at http://www.hddfancontrol.com/

I bought it and it works like a charm!

Just an update to my last post. I took the machine apart again and using a can of air blasted all the dust out. I then checked all the connectors and made sure everything looked ok. I pulled the temperature sensor from the drive and the board and then reconnected it, ensuring that the connections were good. I reassembled the machine, plugged it in, and booted it up...same issue. However, my fan will eventually reach about 4.5k RPMs and stay there, not the 5k I reported earlier. Some things to note, the model# for this machine is EMC No 2374. All other fans, and temps, look normal. The HDD temp is at 38C, but the HDD fan is at 4524RPM. The drive I bought, following the guide, was the Seagate model# ST31000524AS. The drive that I pulled out of the machine was the ST31000528AS. The differences can be found here:

The ST31000524AS is a 6Gb/s drive whereas the ST31000528AS is 3GB/s:

Barracuda SATA Product Manual, Rev. A (ST31000524AS):

ST31000524AS

Barracuda 7200.12 Serial ATA Product Manual, Rev. C (ST31000528AS):

ST31000528AS

I went ahead and purchased the ST31000528AS from another site to see if that makes a difference. If it does, the step by step guide might need to reflect this information. I'll post an update once the other drive is installed. Some more system info:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac11,1

Processor Name: Intel Core i5

HDD fan control is not the best solution, but the problem is that temp sensor on iMac 27" mid 2011 is inside the cable for communicating with logic board. So the only solution is to replace your HDD with model that apple say it will work. Have found somewhere on the network listed models that will work properly. I had same problem. Inside iMac27" mid 2011 was 1TB Segate baracuda and I want 2TB any HDD. First try to replace with 2TB WD, but fan goes up to 5,5K rpm and temp reading over iStat nano says 42 Celsius on HDD which gets confusing me. Then put Segate baracuda 2TB and everything is same. 5,5k rpm on fan and aproximately 41 Celsius on HDD. Revs and temp gets to normal when I get back 1TB original HDD. Gonna try to find exact models of HDD's which can go as replacment for original. Hope this will help. Cheers

Get yourself a can of compressed air and try blowing out the power supply and all of your heat sinks.

You might also want to check the temperature of the motherboard components - CPU, GPU, Memory... Something else is getting hot, that's why the fan is speeding up.

Did you ever remedy this? I recently replaced the drive in my i5 27" iMac with an identical drive bought from this site. I am experiencing the same thing you described. The HD fan will start out at around 2.5k and slowly ramp up to 5k+. I tried everything suggested by the original responders, no luck. Any other ides?

I had the local Reseller and service centre put in a new 2 TB drive. When I got it back after about 2 min the fan for the hard drive went to 5500RPM. After talking to someone that worked directly with apple, they told me to check the sensor cable to the drive and make sure the white dot is facing up. Remember to have that plug, plugged in closest to the sata connector. Everything is working fine now.

Thanks Patrick for the hddcontrol app idea!!

I bought the app for 32$ and the fan noise is gone !

Much better solution than having to buy another HD with the same firmware than the previous one from Apple!

Thanks again!!

No software appears to work for me. I have upgraded from a Seagate 1TB to a Seagate 2TB and the fans are super loud. Is there a guide anywhere on what to short?

This is BS and I have bought my last iMac. Hard Drives are always the first thing a person will need to replace (or maybe RAM) on a computer.

My 2009 iMac had hard drive failure and Apple wants $300 to put a $99 hard drive into it. They won't sell me the right one and I have purchased three now, none of which are satisfactory to my machine.

I am going to take it apart and check the white dot, that is the only thing I can think might work at this point.
