I had the same thing happen to me. The larger black top piece (containing the boards) has and input for a half inch long data cable. The data (ribbon) cable is on the piece below. Make sure to insert the data cable into the slot. It's important to close the flap on the slot for the cable to work. Be patient and you can do it. My 10 year old son was persistent and did it on the 3rd try. Good luck!

This fix works perfectly. Getting the data tape into the connector in the device required setting the little lock on top and that was a little fussy. Persistence paid off and the device is now working again. Thank you

Happy to find this article, just what I needed, echo now works. The #1 key importance to this article, “close the flap on the slot for the cable to work”. Nearly 5 year old article but still relevant and saved my echo, Alexa is once again alive on the device, Thank You gregmerig

A small part of the light ring got stuck inside the speaker and now it's hard to change the volume. I can't take the part out to make it work smoothly again and I don't know what to do.

Had a similar problem recently.

I know it's been a while. We got one of these, new in the box at a yard sale for $35. It worked great until it took a spill from the top of a tall cabinet and landed head first on a hardwood floor.

Didn't work at all at first, but when I examined it carefully, I noticed the outer edge of the very top had been dented in, trapping the volume ring and deforming art of it to be above and some below the normal position.

I took a narrow flat blade (not sharp), instead it between the outside (the dented parts) and the inner ring and twisted back closer to but not entirely (the plastic would break if bent too far) and this had two effects. That is, after pushing the light ring back into place as much as allowed, the volume ring was now only slightly stiff - it's back on top of the cabinet - and it otherwise works perfectly.

Not sure I would pay more for one of these. The speaker quality is nice and fills a small room easily, but 90+% of the time, All she does is tell us the weather
