Are the 2010 MacBook Air 13" and 11" memory cards interchangeable?

Is the 256GB memory card of the 2010 13" MacBook Air usable in the 11" MacBook Air? That is to say: 1) Are the memory cards the same form factor? 2) Is the current consumption of the 256GB card supported by the 11" Air? 3) Are the interfaces otherwise electrically and mechanically compatible? 4) Is there any software lockout on the 11" Air of additional memory beyond its current maximum of 128GB? The plan would be to purchase an 11" w/128GB and a 13" w/256GB; swap the memory cards; sell the 13" on eBay and keep the 11" w/256GB?

The short answer, yes they are interchangeable. Both machines are running smoothly with no issues whatsoever.

I wouldn't be so confident without actual evidence. The memory boards on the 11" and 13" machines have different part numbers and are oriented 180-degrees differently. They may be identical and/or compatible, but a few thousand dollars in purchase is not an easy thing to drop on an assumption.

In my experience disassembling most of Apple's laptops, the things they do not standardize between models are absurd.

I would either wait for someone to test it out first, or roll the dice and try it yourself.

Good luck!

I've done it. It works. The big difference between the 11 and 13-inchers is that there are a series of chips _under_ the blade SSD on the 11-inch, whereas the the 13-inch is just empty space under the SSD (in order for there to be room for the double-sided chips on the blade itself). I'm not sure if they're RAM or whatnot (I have my doubts, since their size and quantity don't seem to change between 2GB and 4GB models).

At any rate, you can put the 256GB SSD in the 11-inch, but the four chips on the bottom of the blade are going to be in direct contact with the aforementioned series of chips directly on the logic board. I tried the installation with a piece of electrical tape between them to try and mitigate any heat issues, but that caused there to be an uncomfortable amount of flex required in the blade module in order for it to be screwed in.

At any rate, I'm typing this answer on an 11-incher as we speak, with a 256GB SSD and nothing seems to be blowing up quite yet.

I took the 256 out of a 13-inch Air, which I'll sell with the 128 in it now. No issues as of yet - everything's humming along beautifully.

The chip will bow without the electrical tape if you tighten the screw at the end of the blade opposite the SATA slot all the way, but if you back off a half or full turn, there is no bending at all.

I think it's a reasonable enough solution that I plan on using it as my daily driver. Given the placement of those unidentified chips underneath the SSD, I wouldn't expect Toshiba's official replacement part to fit any better than the one sourced from the 13-inch Air. Until someone figures out how to get all 8 memory chips on to one side of the blade, nobody's going to have a cleaner solution to the problem we've got than simply brute-forcing the 256 in there.

Yes.

I can't find any evidence of this, but there's no reason to think it wouldn't be true. As for 1), If they're going to go to the trouble to make custom-form flash drives, you can be sure they're going to make as few different designs as possible to save money.

As for 2 and 3, You could try emailing these guys and asking them if their aftermarket 256GB drive will work in a 13" MBA; the fact that they can fit 256GB of flash into an 11" MBA is a pretty good sign that it will work (electrically and driver-wise). It seems like their product is proof of 4).

It seems that 256gb module in the 13" MacBook Air has double the width of the 64gb and the 128gb modules (3.7 mm vs ~ 2mm if I recall correctly). So while they are electrically compatible it might not fit.

Any update? Has anyone shoehorned a 13" 256GB SSD into an 11" yet?

@geoffreydiamond thanks for the pics. few questions:

where did you source the 256gb ssd?

any issues now several days later?

does the chip bow w/o the electrical tape?

would you consider this a reasonable long-term solution?

i look forward to doing the upgrade myself once I can find a 256gb ssd.

OWC has three sizes of replacement SSD cards for the 2010 Airs (180, 240 & 360 GB selling for $499.99, $579.99 and $1,179.99 respectively). A little pricey for me. I think I'll wait and see what happens later this year.

Yeah, I saw that... I'm frothing at the mouth over the 360GB chip... but it'll be a cold day in !^^& when I spend as much on disk space as I spent on the computer itself!

I recently swapped out a 256gb from a 13" Air into my 11". Seems to work fine, with only one thing bothering me so far. When I put my computer to sleep it shuts down completely. I haven't had the time to figure out why, but every time I go to use my computer it is off and I have to turn it on to work. Not wake it up from sleep/hibernation, but an actual power on.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? If it keeps up I'm just going to have to swap the drives back and look into other (pricier) options. :(

@geoffreydiamond: I'v got a question concerning the pics you shared...

At the first picture from your system profiler I saw you changed the icons from the program- download- and document-folder at the dock. where have you got this nice icons and is it just changing the icon as usual?

Thanks for your reply.

My Nov 2010 11" Macbook Air has 4GB RAM and the 128GB SSD. The body became badly cracked in an accident recently - it's going to be an expensive repair so, since I really want to upgrade to the 13", what do you think of this plan - buy a used 13" w/ 128GB and 4GB RAM on craiglist, and move my SSD into it? Would this be technically possible? (seems so from the earlier posts but I wanted to double-check)

If this is OK to do, I will not have to spend the time moving data over, re-install software etc. which has value to me.

Thanks -H

And this just in....! I was double-checking things on Apple's web site and they do in fact ship 11-inch Macbook Airs with a 256GB SSD if desired. Sweet! -H

I just moved a 120GB SSD from my 13" MBA late 2010 (A1369) to an 11" MBA late 2010 (A1370), and took the 64GB one out of the 11" to an external housing from OWC.

Only one issue, the 11" MBA space for the SSD has the logic board RAM chips right underneath the SSD. When I tightened the retaining screw the 120GB SSD card flexed a bit. Nothing startling, but it put the connector under some stress. This is because the 120GB SSD has chips on both sides, and the lower ones push on the RAM ships -- tightening the retaining screw puts upward pressure on the connector at the other end!

I made a plastic shim to act as a spacer under the SSD at the retaining screw end. Then I could tighten the screw without stressing the SSD/connector. Anyway it is all working well now.
