When my husband tried to update the computer with some software from Iraq the monitor went black.I can hear it running but can't see anything.

Try to boot with your operating system disk. If successful select utilities/disk repair and run disk repair until it reports no trouble found. If this works I would delete the software--if not try hooking up an external monitor and see if you get video. If you do the problem is in the cables to the LCD or the backlight and we need more information as to exactly which model you have to help you. I am including a link to help you identify your unit.
