Why does my screen no longer recognize touch? Can I fix this?

My iPhone 6s Plus won't recognize touch anymore?

I've had it for a little over 2 years and have kept it protected in a shell case with a touchscreen protector since day one.

I usually store it in a protective pocket in my backpack when I'm on the go and haven't damaged it at all physically.

It seemed to start tripping out with flashing grey lines at the top of the screen. The touchscreen wouldn't register any touch while these lines appeared.

After a few seconds, the lines would go away, and everything would go back to normal.

Now, it doesn't register any touch to the screen at all.

Outside of Seri communication through headphones, it's useless.

I took it to Apple and was told, "it can be fixed by replacing it," which makes sense and doesn't make sense all at the same time.

Verizon told me I'd have to pay it off and then buy a new phone.

Has anybody else dealt with this?

This is a common problem with iPhone 6 Plus's—we recently wrote a story about it. The issue is that the Touch IC is failing, and the only permanent solution is to replace it with a new chip. There are currently a few repair shops throughout the U.S. that will perform this repair, but since Apple refuses to claim responsibility for this design defect your options are:

a) Take it to a microsoldering specialist

b) become a microsoldering specialist or

c) buy a new phone.

None of these solutions are ideal, and we hope that the manufacturer will extend their warranty period or offer compensation for folks like you, but for now you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Keep us posted on your repair story and best of luck!

The Genius Bar said it was something defective with the phone, but when I asked him to tell me more about the issue, he danced around it and said I'd have to ask corporate.

Thank you for the complete answer, I really appreciate it!

P.S. Is there a movement of folks like me who are demanding Apple replace our phones?

That's a great question! One of our industry friends, Louis Rossman, says he believes this will blow into a class-action lawsuit, but I'm not aware of any class-building or consolidated attempt to communicate with Apple on consumers' behalf.

When Error 53 happened, Apple danced around the issue for about a week while people raised heck before they conceded that the error was on their part and pushed a fix for it. This screen issue will take much more time and money to solve so it will likely be a longer process and people will need to be more vocal about it to see results.

@evan Thank you for your response. You mention that this is a common problem with iPhone 6 plus but original post is for a iPhone 6s plus where I believe the IC is not in the logic board.

To the best of your knowledge, do you know of any way of testing the touch ic on an iphone 6s plus.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you try doing a hard reset? That always worked with my old iPod touch, just hold down the power and home button until the iPhone reboots and see if anything has changed. All data will be safe with this simple method

Thanks! Yeah, I've tried a hard reset. I've refreshed my phone after backing it up. It seems like it's more of a hardware issue? The guy at the Genius Bar was trying to flex it gently to see if he could fix it.
