Mac will not shut down/sleep

So I spilled some water on my MacBook keyboard a couple of days ago and after drying it everything works fine now except for the keyboard, now using a USB keyboard.

It strangely won't shut down or sleep. If I press the shut down button it goes through the process and the screen goes black, but, then it boots right up again. Similarly, if I select sleep the screen starts going black, but, then it comes right back on. And if I close the lid the screen goes black, but, I can still hear the fan etc... running.

Any advice as this is totally impractical to use. I know the computer is old but it seems a shame because everything else works perfectly :(

Any advice on what is happening would be greatly appreciated!

Well, it is repairable if only the keyboard got damaged. Often liquid damage migrates to the logic board and other parts so as you work on the system to replace the keyboard make sure you address any visible wetness or corrosion using a good grade of isopropyl alcohol (85% or better) and cotton swabs (Q-Tips).

Here is the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Upper Case Replacement and here is the needed part: MacBook Unibody (Model No. A1342) Upper Case - Apple P/N 661-5396

Thanks! But is replacing the whole upper case the only way to fix keyboard corrosion?(ie. can you just replace the keyboard)

Not really practical here, its just easier to do the whole upper case. Besides its not that expensive Vs what the MacBook Pro line would cost.

Sorry! I have one more question: from a logistical perspective, does it make sense that a corroded keyboard would cause issues with shutting down/sleeping, or are my chances of fixing that by replacing the keyboard nonexistent? I am not sure if anyone can answer this question but anything would be appreciated as right now I have to drain my battery at the end every day just to get the darn thing to turn off! Thanks!
