LCD backlight goes out after OS finishes booting?

I've replaced a ton of 6, 6+, and 6S screens with no issues. I got one in the other day with only an LCD which appeared to be damaged. Straightforward repair, afterwards everything worked fine. Ran through post checklist, literally everything worked as expected.

A few days later, the customer returned with the phone saying it went black on him. Backlight was completely out, but everything else appears functional. At first I figured defective screen, so I tried another and get the same thing. However, immediately after changing the screen the backlight would come on briefly and power off.

The phone sat for a day or so without charge while I worked on other customer devices and it died. What I'm not really getting is immediately after it completely ran out of power, the backlight worked completely as expected while it was sitting on the charge. Charging indicator is completely lit and doesn't have any issues, but the moment it boots into the OS it stays on for a moment or two and goes out.

I've been reading that the backlight issues can be caused by damaged traces and longscrew damage (though the screws here get laid out in order so it's not likely they were mixed up). Would that cause delayed failure, and an inop backlight only after the OS finishes booting?

Does the LCD itself light up? Does the logo appear? And can you wake it up after it goes out, or does it take rebooting?

Do you have backlight in recovery mode?

The screen will light up sometimes. I left the battery disconnected overnight to verify. It will come up with the charging indicator, and recovery indicator, but only if it has been left with the battery drained or unplugged for a while. The backlight will stay on as long as you have the screen on, and will pop up anytime you press the power button to check the status.

Once it goes out, it does not come back on until you let it sit a while without a connected power source.

Is the brightness control part of the backlight circuit in some way?

If I'm correct the brightness setting gets loaded after Apple logo / bootup finish.

I recently had an issue, similar to this. Repaired a phone that was bought off eBay, so this helps with the confusion. I'm trying to figure out if I've shorted something on the board, damaging the backlight, while doing the repair
