What is a HDD proximity sensor on iMac 2010?

Hi,

I was trying to upgrade an old iMac mid 2010, 21.5" to El Capitan from 10.6.8, when I noticed that the back of the imac was getting quite hot. I opened the front panel and cleaned the fans etc without removing the logic board etc. The only thing I removed was the HDD. After restarting and working for a few hours I still think that the back is still quite warm, though not at the center (where the HDD is) but on the left and right top corners. I installed the trial version of iStat Menu and though the HDD temp is shown as 49C the HDD proximity is showing 254C.

I did recheck the hard disk sensor cable properly while putting back the HDD. So What exactly is the 'HDD Proximity Sensor' and why would it show this ridiculously high temp when all other temps are below 60C.

Also has anyone ever installed El Capitan on old iMacs? Would it heat up the system more than 10.6?

Did you disconnect the HD cables in the cleaning process? This series of system uses an internal thermal sensor within the HD. Here is the sensor cable connection: Black/Gray wire. Depending on who's drive you have the configuration of the wires may not look like this one, make sure its connected. If it is, you may have either a drive which is starting to fail or the internal sensor has failed.

Now the rub... In either case you'll need to replace the drive. I would recommend you go with a hybrid drive vs a traditional drive. Or, if you can swing the cost a SSD will also work here.

As for the best bang for the buck I would go with this drive: Seagate Desktop 3.5" SSHD. This drive offers auto SATA port sense technology so it will match up with your systems SATA port which is SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). You will still need a replacement thermal sensor for your systems heat management system. As Mayer pointed out you'll need: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2009-2010 Hard Drive Upgrade.

If you want to go with a SSD drive it will need to run at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). Some drives are fixed at SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) so you do need to review the data sheet to make sure it supports SATA II. I would recommend Samsung 750 EVO or 850 EVO drive, both offer SATA II support. Here with the SSD you'll need both the: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2009-2010 Hard Drive Upgrade and you'll need an adapter frame to support the 2.5" SSD in the 3.5" frame the old drive was held in with: OWC 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Adapter Bracket.

Thanks for your detailed comment Dan... and everyone else for their instant support. In fact I think it was a bug on the 'iStat menu', firstly because according to it's own reading the HDD temp was normal and the fan speeds also... (I still do not understand the HDD proximity sensor reading).

But finally I bit the bullet and upgraded to El Capitan and the readings have remained the same... in fact after the upgrade I installed 'iStat menu' and also 'TG pro' and all the readings remain pretty acceptable. On the new version of 'iStat menu' there is no reading as 'HDD proximity' so I think they have removed this option.

Thanks for the link Mayer, but no I did not change the drive... I merely removed it to access the hdd fan and then reinstalled it... but the hdd temp is shown as 49C and 'proximity' as 254C if the sensor is measuring the hdd temp then why the difference..?? This is what I don't understand..

Lets see if we can get some better diagnostics here. Download this app: TG Pro. Sadly you'll need to buy it to gain the full benefit of the app. Lets see what your fans & thermal sensors are showing. I'll bet you forgot to re-connect one.

unfortunately TG pro does not support 10.6... can use it only if I upgrade to Capitan... However, I will reopen the imac today to see recheck the connectors
