Symbol appears when charging but won't turn on

I have only had this phone for two months, it's battery was at 8% when it turned off. When I went to charge it the battery symbol appeared, but then after a while I noticed it actually hadn't turned on. I've tried the home/lock button reboot with charger and with out, but nothing. iTunes on my lap top doesn't recognise it and yes I have tried different chargers, but still nothing. I'm so frustrated, please help.

Did the battery drain quickly?

It was fine to begin with, it just drained quickly at the very last 10% but I assumed that was normal

If the charger port does not plug in fully check the port for any gunk and if there is use tweezers, toothpick or something equivalent to clean out the gunk carefully.

Otherwise there is a chance the battery may have gone faulty.

Assuming the charger, port and cable are all okay, then it sounds like a completely dead battery. Presumably it is a secondhand item and several years old, though you have only recently acquired it. The seller may have got rid of it for this reason.

The good news is that replacement battery kits (including the tools) are easy and cheap to get and if you or a friend are up for it, it takes less than an hour to install.

Start with a clean table, small pots and tape to keep track of the screws and a good strong light to work by.

We did this for my son's iPhone 5 and it came back to life like a new one and is still going strong more than a year later.

I got it brand new in box and wrapped, of eBay tho. If the battery was dead why does it still have enough power to show battery symbol?

Because I've had plenty of faulty batteries before that reported incorrect amount of voltage inside the battery or the battery level is incorrect that show this exact issue.

It's fairly simple to reseal a iPhone 4 box and sell it as looking brand new.

Even if boxed, it must be at least 3 years since its manufacture. You can look up exactly when using the phone's serial number, on the MacRumours site.

Also this from Wikipedia which may be relevant :

On April 28, 2014, Apple initiated an out of warranty recall program to replace any failing power buttons of iPhone 5 models which were manufactured prior to March 2013 at no cost.[22] On August 23, 2014, Apple announced a program to replace batteries of iPhone 5 models that "may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently" which were sold between September 2012 and January 2013.[23][24]
