Why won't my kindle start?

The screen has the battery sign with an exclamation mark on it. I charged it until the little button turned green, but the screen remains the same. There are also ''scratch" marks on the screen.

My kindle has been in my backpack for a while so I think I must have dropped it and that is the reason for the broken screen. Please help!!!
