Vizio E50-C1: Resolution not supported on image slideshow intermittent

On my Vizio E50-C1, I am trying to play an image slideshow of a dozen or more JPG photos. Intermittently, a message will pop up instead of a photo saying that the photo's resolution is not supported. However, sometimes the photo will display anyway. The dimensions of the photos are all within specs of the tv (under 1080p) and are 72dpi. We have tried it on several different USB drives with FAT32 formatting and in the root directory. Vizio support hasn't been able to solve the issue. Any idea?

Lucas Roberts does it always happen with the same images? What are the image properties, not the setup on your TV?

Lucas Roberts, sounds more like the image setup than the settings on your TV. "If you are seeing a not supported message on your TV you will need to adjust the resolution ( or image size ) of the source picture i.e. DVD player, Xbox or cable box to fit on your HDTV. You would do that through the settings control of that device. Most common resolutions will be 1920 x 1080 also known as 1080p. The second most common supported resolution would be 1280 x 720 or 720p." from here. That is for the images, not the TV.

Most photo files have a second hidden file of data (date, location etc). The Vizio is trying to display the hidden file for each photo and when it does it displays unsupported resolution and shows the file size as 0 Kb. After it cycles through the hidden file it will display the photographs. I’m not sure how to stop that. I tried deleting the hidden files but that corrupted the USB. Perhaps a different file type. We could use some help from Vizio. All I get is instructions on playing from a USB thumb drive.

This is the issue for me, the photos that have the “not supported” start with a . then the photo name. Just have to tell it to exclude it from the slideshow. Every. Single. Time you turn the tv off then back on, so making it ultra tedious. Vizio needs to do a software update on their end to tell it to ignore these files.

If you are seeing files that start with ".", this is likely due to your putting files on a flashdrive from a Mac. What you will need to do is run dot_clean on the volume.

dot_clean -m "/Volumes/<HARDRIVENAME>/"

If you run into errors, it most likely worked. If it still didn't work, you can try to run First Aid via Disk Utility or reformat the flash drive with the pictures and then rerun dot_clean.

Even if you delete hidden files on the Mac, it won't work. I was only able to get this to work by running dot_clean.

Good luck to future readers.
