Keyboard Replacement

I had a light spill on the keyboard a while ago, everything seems to be working fine, apart form some sticky keys, even after I cleaned them, and the 't' and 'i' keys stopped working...

Can I just buy a keyboard & replace the old one or do I have to buy the whole topcase?

Also, the teardown shows how to disassemble everything down to the logic board, is there anything 'difficult' after that in the replacement process?

For example, could I replace it with this one?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...

thanks

EDIT:

Thanks, but wow, 300 bucks.

Could there be a way to fix those two keys somehow?

The spill was only on the top right part & only reached a few of those top left keys, i & t stopped working a couple of days after.

Maybe? Please..?

again, Thanks

I'm using an external keyboard, you wouldn't believe how often the letters t & i come up...

The spill was about 3 months ago, and it was...sunny D.

I don't put drinks on the same table as my electronics, but I can't say that about my friends, who happen to damage just about every piece of technology in my house...'accidentally'.

I let it dry for a day, & I opened it up to see if there was any further damage. Didn't look like it. No sticky stuff on the logic board or anything else as far as I can tell.

My mac has been having that sleeping problem, that I know many people have been experiencing, but I don't think that could be related. Either way, I didn't get the extended warranty, and I don't have much faith in the regular mac warranty since I'm the one to always void warranties. I'm just new to the whole apple world so I need some pointers. But thanks a bunch for your help.

Hi! I read this and just wanted to mention, the keyboard/power button assembly is available on eBay for about $50, and it is in fact possible to do a swap -- I just did it. I wouldn't recommend it if you can find a way to avoid it, because it's a very laborious procedure and you have to peel off the two layers of keyboard illumination from the back of the keyboard, and then remove about 40 of the tiniest screws you've ever seen (which are spread across the back of the keyboard, connecting it to the topcase), but it is possible, and will save you about $250.

I have a feeling Apple doesn't sell the keyboard/power button assembly as a separate part from the topcase, which may give the impression that the procedure is not possible to do, however like I mentioned it's available on eBay. At first I was worried that the keyboard was permanently embedded inside the topcase like the white A1181 MacBook, but that is not the case, and after removing those 40 or so screws, it does come out.

+right. I did it a couple of times on the 15" models. Apple likes to sell whole assemblys rather than spare parts. One of the reasons i'll never become an "official".

For the unibodies unfortunately you have to replace the whole upper case. Here is the part you need with all the instructions.

In the meantime, you can plug in an external keyboard which should work fine (aside from any other damage the spill might have caused.) Did you let it dry completely? Like days? What was the liquid? Water? Other liquids can have much worse effects.

As you have seen, damage from liquid can keep occurring long after the original incident. the life of the computer might even be shortened. Plus, if it has some other, unrelated failure while under warranty, when Apple opens it up and sees evidence of a spill, they probably won't touch it.

Make it a habit to keep drinks on a separate table.

Well, that was fun... Let's just say I'm never trying that again! Broke the backlight, now I'm just ordering a topcase. Screw replacing the keyboard.

I actually ended up completely taking the computer apart and replacing the keyboard and the 50 or so tiny screws about 8 times due to other malfunctioning keyboards... Ended up with one that finally worked. It fixed the sleep problem as well, to anyone reading this with the insomniac Mac problem. Try replacing the keyboard because certain keys might be acting up waking the computer, like in my case. Thanks everyone for all your help.

You can actually replace the keyboard alone fairly easily! I don't know why they say you have to replace the whole top case, because if you've got the guts to take the logic board and everything else out, you might as well just peel back the illuminator cover and get to work pulling all those tiny screws in the keyboard... Just be careful when peeling up the black adhesive keyboard cover, because you will need to replace it. I used the edge of the ifixit Sesame tool (very thin flat metal opening tool) to carefully slip under any bits of adhesive, and had the keyboard exposed in no time. Also be careful because the clear plastic sheet under the black one is actually the keyboard illuminator. Once under all that, it's a mere 50 or so tiny screws, 2 screws in the power button backing, and you've got the keyboard out. Use a magnetized #000 phillips, it will make life much easier than anything else. Starting with the computer completely assembled, it took me less than 1 hour start to finish - it was my first time replacing a keyboard but I take these computers apart for other reasons all the time. Have fun!

if you choose to replace the keyboard make sure you take your time and try not to strip any of the tiny phillip head screws. i just did a keyboard replacement and there are alot of screws to remove and once a screw is stripped its a pain to get it out.

Hi. I need to do the same as everyone in replacing the keyboard. My question is, do i just follow the guide through removing the topcase, & then go after the keyboard itself with the screws. If possible could some one post an outline to help, even if it with out pictures. I just really need a little guidance, wouldn't want to get as up close & personal with my MBP as many times as Julia did...lol

Thanks in Advance if Anyone can help

P.S.- My MBP one day just randomly locked my shift key, even though physically the key was up.

After spilling water on my wife's mac Mid 2009, I just also achieved a repair taking off the keyboard and exchanging it for a new one! It took me around four and a half hours but I did it! :) And it was my first time doing a repair in a laptop.

My only major difficulty is that 2 of the 40 keyboard screws refused to get off. So the repair wasn't perfect, but, these 2 now lacking screws aren't visible.

To facilitate putting back again the screws, I used the magnet of the sub-woofer to magnetise the screwdriver. If not, it is almost impossible to fit the (very) small screws back in place.

Have a mid-2009 MBP 13, with UK keyboard layout, which means it is slightly different from the US original one, mainly in that the return key and a few others are differently shaped. The point of this is that the top case is different.

The MBP has worked like a charm. It's amazing how long it's lasted, but now the keyboard, and especially the power button have given up. Cleaned it with a wet cleaning tissue without first powering off. Doh!

This model is now classed "Vintage" by Apple so no miore repairs or parts available. Looked for top case and found the one at iFixit linked to in older post, but that has the original US keyboard layout. Thus two questions:

1. Can I put on the iFixit's top case with the US keyboard layout and key shapes on an MBP that has the UK one with a differently shaped return button etc?

2. I will likely give the keyboard replacement a go since that's really all I need. However, where do I find a list of tools needed? Have none now.
