Sounds like you may have gotten an incomplete load. Try starting up holding down the Option key and select the Recovery Partition. Then run Disk Utilities and give it a try. That failing do a system reinstall from the recovery partition. BTW - you do not have to do those updates, it's just recommended. What system were you running and what did you update to?

It won't go into recovery mode
Do you have access to another Mac and a firewire wire cable?
Yes to another Mac, but what's a FireWire cable?
Dan is trying to show you what is need ed to boot into Target Mode to repair your hard drive.
Connect the two computers with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. Start up the computer to be used as a disk in target disk mode: If the computer is off, start it up while holding down the T key. If the computer is on, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and then click Target Disk Mode.
@becca - Here's an image of the connector ends of the FireWire 800 cable:
You'll find the connector on your system on the left with this symbol:

I don't think I have one of those. Would it be connected to something common?
You may need to buy one at a good computer store or online. Did you look at the systems ports on the left side of your system for the symbol? That's the socket you'll plug the cable into on both your system and the other. If the other system doesn't have a FireWire port it may have the newer Thunderbolt port it will have a lightning bolt symbol and uses a different cable. Your system also has one of these as well, you'll do the same here Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt. Here's the Thunderbolt cable from the Apple online store: 2.0 Meter Thunderbolt cable

Did you just do an OS update? Or did you something more?
da Dan
It was a recommended software update. OS I did the night before

Have you tried to reset the SMC and the PRAM?
da Gautier
I tried pram, what's smc?
da Becca
The SMC is the System Management Controller. It sometimes gets confused and needs to be reset.
Resetting it won't affect your data.
Power off the MacBook and plug in the MagSafe. Then press and hold Shift - Control - Option (left ones) and Power. Release all of them. SMC is reset :)
