Why aren't my usb ports working?

Hi all,

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire V3 372 it has worked absolutely fine up until now where the USB ports aren't working anymore which is a real pain. I have updated the provided drivers searched top to bottom through device manager and meddled with regedit. I can not find a solution anywhere.

Thanks any replies appreciated.

Hi, You say that you have updated the drivers. Have you tried uninstalling the USB controllers (all of them), restarting the laptop and allowing Windows to "find" the controllers again?

Have you also tried to prove if there is power on the USB ports by plugging in a USB device that has a power light or seeing if a self 'powered' USB device works?

Thanks for the suggestion it didn't work though. I tested my iphones USB charger and had no luck I also tested the cable on my another laptop and it worked meaning that the cable wasnt broken or my phone. So I'm guessing that the USB ports are dead and need replacing?

What he meant is do you have a USB device that will lite up when it is plugged into the usb port like a lamp or a blue lighted mouse. The reasoning is to see if your laptop's power converter circuits are outputting the +-5VDC that is required for the USB attached device to work. Alternately you could connect a powered USB adapter and the test if a USB device attached to that will work. If it does then your +-5VDC on your laptop is probably bad. Which is not good BTW.

Hi @isaacp

Did you try uninstalling the USB controllers and then letting Windows find them?

Seems my answer didn't come through...

What program should I scan my PC with and by updating my chipset you mean just reinsalling the drivers provided by Acer, right?

Open your computer, dubbel check the connection with your mainboard or update chipset driver and do a full scan of your pc. Could you give us a screenshot of your usb configuration in device management? Did you update or install anything just before it happend?

I have tried that and so far no luck. I can't provide a screenshot within a comment/reply but I assure you it all looks normal with no yellow exclamation marks on the USB drivers.
