What this part of logic board is? (photo attached)

Hello everyone!

iFixit Community, thank you much for such detailed reviews and replacement guides! Really appreciate your work. I've got a pretty short question. I've bought an old one Mac Mini A1176 on Ebay and now I'm in the middle of cleaning and replacing the parts of this machine to boost it up and use like media server. I've replaced CPU, installed Crystal HD card instead of Airport Antenna, and upgraded RAM, but one part makes me really confused, cause I don't know what it is it, what does it do and what should I do with this part? (Highland on a picture, which attached with a link. It's by the right hand from RAM sockets).

Since my goal is to bring new life to this machine, what should I do with this thing? Cause it looks like CPU, cause it looks like covered with some kind of cooling radiator, but it's not made from steel. Should there be more doze of cooling paste or should I leave it like it was before me. Please, give me an advice. Thank you in advance.

This series uses a North Bridge chip which tended to get warm which is what the heat sink is covering. I would leave it alone.

Your efforts are admiral here, but you do face a few limits with this systems architecture which you can't improve. Sadly, the systems firmware is not 64bit clean so you can't run any of the newer Mac OS's.

Thank you very much for your quick response! One last thing - Since it's a chip, should it be covered with thermal paste. Cause my Mac Mini is pretty old and I'm not sure about the condition of this chip. The thing is I'm not going to replace it. So is it emergent to replace (if needs) the cooling paste just like with CPU, or it will not such important thing to do?

Sure you can redo the thermal paste if you are doing the CPU as well. Just be careful as its easy to damage the chip as its soldered down.

Follow this guide: Technique: How to Apply Thermal Paste. I would recommend you use Arctic Silver Thermal Paste & Arctic Silver ArctiClean to clean off the old paste. You'll need two tubes of paste.
