Intermittant Power Issue but fine once running

Hi,

Recently I obtained an iPad Mini 1 wifi, it looks like its never been opened. It has an intermittent power issue as follow;

It is recognised by iTunes as normal, it charges to 100% but overnight the battery often drains to almost zero if unplugged (short).

Ok, sometimes the Mini will not power on and I have to hold Power button and Home which after a while brings up the Apple logo and boots fine. Once running the Mini does all it should no problems. The charge symbol comes up and all good. USB current tester shows a current draw, great. 100% battery and has a trickle charge of 0.3 to 0.4A. Now this is where it gets kind of odd.

If I power off the device no current draw and I lose USB connection unless I remove and refit the charging lead i (ie, get the ding dong sound in Windows). iTunes throws up a message telling me I have an iPhone in Recovery mode! Latest iOS v9.3.1 installed I might add.

If I now try and power the device back on it refuses to, no current being drawn according to USB tester. Back to having to hold Power button and Home again as above. Once it reboots I get the current shown and we are good to go. So, as long as a current is being drawn I can power up normally, put to sleep and re-awaken fine. No current and I'm doomed.

iTunes is now sat at Recovery Mode screen until I get this MIni powered on again whereby I can restart iTunes and it will be seen normally as a normal functioning iPad.

It can stay on (sleep disabled) for hours or go black and not recover in minutes. It can stay black, show charging still via current tester but not want to power back on. If I remove lightning cable and plug back in it will read 0A right after and will once more need Power and Home button to hard boot.

Is this likely a short in the PMIC? iPad not yet opened to investigate further.

Thanks in advance.

Well oddly, this has been working pretty well since I posted the above in respect of it going into and out of sleep mode. Just this minute turned it off by holding power button and also removed lightning cable and it wouldn't power back on afterwards using power button only. Plugged cable back in and iTunes popped up with 'iPhone in recovery mode' message :(

If I try to click on Restore button it see's it as an iPhone and says no software update possible!

Adding more now...If I put the iPad into recovery mode manually then its seen as an iPad and offers the restore and update path. If I do this the Apple logo appears and the iPad restores fine. It will last ok for a while (battery still at 100% even) then go off and not want to power on as before.

Only way to get this back on is holding power and Home butons again.
