Display Blacks out after running hot, external works - Solved

Apple MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 13" (Unibody) Specs

Identifiers: Late 2008 Aluminum - MB466LL/A - MacBook5,1 - A1278 - 2254

@danj

Machines runs well until stressed. Sure, bad GPU but NO. The external monitor still runs for another ten minutes then the machine restarts itself. Machine cools off and then runs fine till stressed. The problem is it's my granddaughters.

Possible ESD damage? Possible RAM or RAM slot failure? I am testing the RAM now with a new program I just got today from MicroMat.

@mayer - Sorry I got home late last night and a little tipsy :-)

Did you try refreshing the thermal paste yet? Given the age of this system it would be one of the first things I would do here.

@danj - When we opened it up there was what looked like oil on the logic board. No evidence of a spill. Used CG Big Bath ISO http://www.alliedelec.com/gc-electronics... to clean the board. Replaced the thermal paste. The machine has run, playing videos, now for ten hours. What my concern is, this morning, is where the oil came from. I remember some of the machines from this era were liquid cooled. But I don't know if the heat sink in this one was one of them. I don't know what the liquid was in the heat sinks. Could this be an issue and do you think I need to replace the heat sink?

Yes the tube does have a coolant in it. From my experience the coolant evaporated so I only had a film. It's possible yours just went. Do you see any holes in the tube? You'll need a magnifier to be sure and even then you might miss it. The only way I've been sure physically is to weigh a known good unit (exact same unit) from the one in question the lighter one is bad.

How about running TG Pro so you can monitor the CPU's temp.

da

@danj - How about tapping on it to see if I get a hollow sound? The TG Pro, just it or with the disk diet? I really don't think I need to test now since you got the same film, I just need to replace.

I couldn't tell by its sound :-(

@mayor My best guess it could be the fan that is on the computer could be going out I had the same symptoms with my computer awhile back way before I learned about Ifixit and I had to take it into a pro and they said it was the fan so I had it replaced and everything was working fine but if that was not the problem I would definitely say the issue lies with the ram.

@meepfish1 - First it's mayer. It set it up tp play a long video tonight. Ran on the internal display for 20 minutes. That went black but still displayed on the external for an hour. Looks like it went to sleep. It's been on now for 8 hours. I hit the space bar and both monitors woke up. My thinking is that the if the GPU was failing with monitors would fail. If it had an inverter that would explain it.

I knew I was going to make a mistake like that one day I am really sorry I I did that @mayer
