Went through washing machine in Otterbox
Iphone 3GS went through a regular wash/rinse/spin in an Otterbox Defender case. Phone was on when recovered and would recieve calls, texts and calls. Screen was very dark at first. After a few minutes it became brighter but water damage was evident on screen. Phone would restart itself intermittantly and also would indicate that an incompatable accesory of some sort was attached. As day went on, screen became better. After 1st day, it was turned off and in rice for the night. Day 2, screen was better but restarts and error message continued. After day 2, turned off and back in rice. Day 3, was taken out of rice only to recover SIM card contacts. It was never charged or sync'd during the period. It's now Day 4.
How long to wait to sync or charge and see what's damaged? Should I open unit or continue rice?

Update: Phone has usable functionality for the most part. The bottom left corner of the screen is miscolored. The touch screen is not very sensative when trying to end a call. The proximity sensor is not reliable. I have verified that the moisture sensor in the earphone jack is pink... I can make calls, recieve calls and play games. The accelerometer is not the best anymore and I lost all of my music, videos and movies. I am very grateful for your advice and support. I'll be hacking and gutting the phone soon to examine the damage. Best wishes to the other people that have someone else wash their phone!

Im glad to hear that. But, if I were in your shoes, I would open immediately and clean up. If not, the phone will start to malfunction as the contacts and connectors become corroded.

I opened it yesterday and let it dry out disassembled for 24+ hours. It is working fine right now and gets a full charge. The contacts for the battery did not corrode, but all of the water dots were pink. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all of the help.
