Went through washing machine in Otterbox

Iphone 3GS went through a regular wash/rinse/spin in an Otterbox Defender case. Phone was on when recovered and would recieve calls, texts and calls. Screen was very dark at first. After a few minutes it became brighter but water damage was evident on screen. Phone would restart itself intermittantly and also would indicate that an incompatable accesory of some sort was attached. As day went on, screen became better. After 1st day, it was turned off and in rice for the night. Day 2, screen was better but restarts and error message continued. After day 2, turned off and back in rice. Day 3, was taken out of rice only to recover SIM card contacts. It was never charged or sync'd during the period. It's now Day 4.

How long to wait to sync or charge and see what's damaged? Should I open unit or continue rice?

Update: Phone has usable functionality for the most part. The bottom left corner of the screen is miscolored. The touch screen is not very sensative when trying to end a call. The proximity sensor is not reliable. I have verified that the moisture sensor in the earphone jack is pink... I can make calls, recieve calls and play games. The accelerometer is not the best anymore and I lost all of my music, videos and movies. I am very grateful for your advice and support. I'll be hacking and gutting the phone soon to examine the damage. Best wishes to the other people that have someone else wash their phone!

Im glad to hear that. But, if I were in your shoes, I would open immediately and clean up. If not, the phone will start to malfunction as the contacts and connectors become corroded.

I opened it yesterday and let it dry out disassembled for 24+ hours. It is working fine right now and gets a full charge. The contacts for the battery did not corrode, but all of the water dots were pink. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all of the help.

You should of immediately shut the phone off and opened the device and cleaned with alcohol. Being that the phone was in the otterbox that increased your chances of saving the phone. So far you have done everything that you are NOT supposed to do when dealing with water damage. Try opening the phone and completely cleaning the phone with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol and contact cleaner. Then let dry for 2-3 days in rice. One thing I can almost guarantee is that your battery is going to replaced.

I used to get the accessory message.... turned out that my dock was fried.... the otterbox's are pretty dang sturdy, so you might have gotten lucky and Not killed the battery.....

Whenever a Li-ion Battery gets water intrusion, the battery is a goner.... Lithium in its natural state is HIGHLY reactive to water, therefore, you loose ALL charge and ability to recharge..... (Aviation Electrician, USN)

i had my samsung galaxy sii in the otterbox, went thru full wash cycle. no hope, no signs of working on day one. i took the battery out and back cover and put the phone in and separate battery in rice for about a day or half a day. by the time my replacement showed up the next day, the phone worked perfectly normal. i did have a few dropped calls, not sure if it was location or the phone. but the phone is on wi-fi status now and works great as a side device! i finally figured out how to move all my contacts .. it was so easy but export contacts to sim card but i don't know why it took me a week to figure it out!
