No it does not sound right. Post a couple of photos. All you may need is an SATA to USB adapter like this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/35118076?wmlsp...

or an external enclosure.

Most USB external drives these days have the SATA to USB conversion integrated in the drive, which means that you can't access the SATA channel. That is, you could, but it requires some fiddling. Basically you'd have to figure out the internal SATA channel, detach it from the USB converter, wire it to a SATA connector, and add a power connection to the drive.

@flyingdutchman - most of the drives I see do have an adapter but they are usually removable. He needs to open it if it has not been, and post a couple of photos so we can see what it is and give him the correct answer.

Oh I see what is going on. It's probably cheaper to buy Sata to USB adapter or another external hard drive enclosure than repairing the USB port for the external hard drive enclosure.

@benjamen50 Sure the adapter is $13.00. You don't know if the current enclosure is good or if it's the hard drive. The adapter is the way to go. Then you about both and know which one is usable for cheap.

You can take the hard drive out of its enclosure and connect it to a desktop computer if you have one. Otherwise you can take it to a computer repair shop that can recover the data from it or repair it if it's physical damage on the USB port of the hard drive enclosure.
